Part-Time Returns & Product Checking Assistant Location: Bampton, Devon Contract type: Part-time, zero-hours contract Working pattern: Flexible hours by agreement, depending on business need Environment: Friendly, practical, light-workshop setting About the Role We are looking for a reliable, practical and numerate person to help with the checking, sorting and basic repair of products returned by retailers and consumers. This would suit someone who is retired or semi-retired and looking for an easy-going, part-time role in a friendly working environment. The role is based at our premises in Bampton, Devon, and would be ideal for someone with a light engineering, workshop, maintenance, mechanical, practical or hands-on background. No specialist technical knowledge is required, as training will be provided. The most important qualities are common sense, attention to detail, reliability and a willingness to get involved. Key Responsibilities The successful person will help receive and assess returned products, checking what has been sent back and whether the return appears to meet the relevant right-of-return or credit criteria. They will record basic details accurately and help ensure that credits or return decisions can be processed correctly. They will also separate returned stock into appropriate batches depending on condition and next steps. This may include items suitable for resale, items requiring further processing, items to be repaired or refurbished, and items to be moved downstream for parts, recycling or disposal. A practical part of the role will involve looking over non-working or faulty returns, carrying out simple checks, basic repairs and minor refurbishment where possible, with the aim of bringing suitable products back to life and preparing them for resale. This may involve cleaning, testing, simple adjustment, replacing basic components, identifying obvious faults and ensuring products are presented in a saleable condition. Typical Duties Returns checking Open, inspect and record products returned by retailers and consumers. Return assessment Check what has been received against paperwork and assess whether the return is appropriate for credit or further review. Stock sorting Separate returns into batches for resale, repair, refurbishment, parts recovery, disposal or further processing. Product checking Carry out simple visual and functional checks on returned items. Basic repair Analyse obvious faults and undertake simple practical repairs where appropriate. Refurbishment Clean, tidy and prepare suitable returned products for resale. Record keeping Accurately record quantities, product condition and actions taken. Workshop support Keep the returns area tidy, safe and organised. Person Specification We are looking for someone who is practical, dependable and comfortable working with returned physical products. A background in light engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, workshop work, repairs, tools, mechanical work or similar would be helpful, but it is not essential. The right person will be reasonably fit, as the role may involve standing, moving stock, handling returned items and working in a practical environment. They should also be numerate and able to keep simple records accurately. Essential Requirements Practical ability Comfortable handling, checking and sorting physical products. Common sense Able to make sensible initial assessments of product condition. Numeracy Able to count, record and check quantities accurately. Attention to detail Able to spot missing parts, damage, obvious faults or inconsistencies. Reliability Able to attend agreed shifts and work independently when needed. Reasonable fitness Able to stand, move around and handle returned products safely. Positive attitude Friendly, flexible and happy to work as part of a small team. Desirable Experience Experience in any of the following would be useful: light engineering, workshop work, mechanical repairs, maintenance, product assembly, returns processing, stock control, quality checking, refurbishment, DIY, tools, practical hobbies or hands-on technical work. However, no formal technical qualification is required. Full guidance will be given, and the role is intended to be straightforward and manageable.
