Job Description Founded in 1974, Community Access continues to uphold and operate as a pioneer of supportive housing and social services in NYC for people with mental health concerns. We proudly lead advocacy efforts that rally our community to promote human rights, social justice, and economic opportunities for all. Our programs are spread across 25 locations and include over 1200 units of supportive housing in three boroughs, the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center, Peer-driven Crisis Respite Center, Adult Home Initiative, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) and the Intensive Mobile Team (IMT). Department Overview The Residential Crisis Support Program Respite Center (CRC) is a Community Access Health Division program. The CRC is an alternative to hospitalization program offering short-term respite care in a friendly and supportive home-like environment. Guests are provided with the opportunity to learn and use recovery and relapse prevention skills to ameliorate their current psychiatric crisis and to provide more effective tools to cope with future crises and avoid hospital-based care. Recovery-oriented services are provided 24-hour and day and include peer support, self-advocacy education and self-help training. The Residential Crisis Support Program offers people experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis an up to 28 days residential alternative while supporting individuals in continuing their established daily activities such as visiting with friends, attending a doctor’s appointment or going to work. Position Overview The Per Diem Respite Worker is responsible for all tasks related to the Respite daily operation during shift hours including providing services and support to CRC guests. Some responsibilities of the Respite Worker are to develop partnerships with guests experiencing crisis utilizing trauma-informed, recovery-oriented intentional peer support and promotes the provision of a comfortable, secure, and trusting environment where guests are listened to and respected by staff. Respite Workers are skilled with the mental health system with a focus on guest’s personal recovery process. In addition to performing the typical tasks described in Assignment Levels I and II, is also responsible for one or more of the following tasks: Examples of Typical Tasks: • Provides leadership, guidance and clinical supervision, orientation and training to subordinate professional recreational therapy and support staff, volunteers, students and other hospital or health care facility staff., • Helps staff to recognize and deal with problems relating to patients, staff or ward routines, assists staff in recognizing own assets and to effectively use these assets and resources in their work with patients., • Insures that Activity Therapy treatment plans and progress notes are completed and current for patients and for assessing the quality of each patient's evaluation., • May participate in formulating patient treatment plans or may formulate patient treatment plans as a member of an interdisciplinary team., • Maintains communication with other disciplines and services., • Attends and contributes to departmental meeting sand facility-wide training programs., • Participates in overall planning of a Therapeutic Activity program for the facility., • Maintains communication with community resources and research programs for patient's referrals., • Explores new developments within the field of Activity Therapy and works with staff in implementation of those applicable to their setting for reevaluation of ongoing programs. Applies new techniques and skills in a continuing effort to provide effective treatment modalities., • May select and order supplies and equipment and maintain functional operational level of equipment, supplies and work area. Qualification Requirements: Assignment Level I • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 18 credits in recreation, physical education, dance, fine arts, applied arts (including therapy) and 12 credits in psychology, social psychology, group work, group dynamics and/or related field; or, • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and one year of full-time experience in planning, coordinating and supervising a recreation activities program in a hospital, health care or related facility; or, • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree. Assignment Level II In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Level I, Assignment Level II requires: • One year of full-time experience as described in two (2) above. Summary of position: This full-time position reports to the Director of the Manhattan Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation Court Clinic (Manhattan FPECC) in the Division of Correctional Health Services. The Manhattan FPECC, located in the Manhattan Criminal Court Building at 100 Centre Street, is responsible for conducting court-ordered fitness to proceed evaluations under CPL Article 730 and presentencing evaluations under CPL Article 390 for criminal defendants with cases in New York County; preparing written reports in a timely manner for submission to the Courts; and providing courtroom testimony as necessary. Detailed Tasks: • Conduct court-ordered evaluations of criminal defendants and submit timely written reports to the Courts, • Conduct psychological testing (intelligence, neuropsychological, personality, malingering, etc.) as needed, • Provide teaching and supervision for clinicians in training, • Participate in regular supervision with the Director of the Queens FPECC, • Actively participate in staff meetings, clinic quality improvement projects, and continuing education, • Remain aware of and in compliance with organizational policies and procedures, • From time to time, as needed, conduct CPL 730 and CPL 390 evaluations in the other FPECC clinics (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan), • Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Queens Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation Court Clinic or the city-wide Director of the Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation Court Clinics Preferred Skills: • Excellent diagnostic and evaluation skills with particular attention to issues related to forming opinions about psycholegal questions, • Excellent forensic report writing skills, • Clinical experience working with forensic mental health populations, • Experience in administering and scoring a wide range of psychological tests, • Excellent organizational and communication skills, • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with other disciplines, • Proficiency with word processing programs and spreadsheet programs, • Fluent in written and spoken English Minimum Qualifications: 1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; and, 2. Two (2) years of post-licensure experience, one (1) year of which must have been post-licensure supervisory experience; or three (3) years of post-licensure experience; and 3. Completion of the NYC Health + Hospitals Supervisory training within three (3) months of appointment.
