Job Summary: The Research Scientist position will design and develop innovative materials for OLED technology. Duties of this position include modeling, design, and synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds with an emphasis on synthesis of novel materials and understanding the properties of the materials. This role will be a strong collaborator with our chemists and engineers to improve OLED materials and devices. Key Responsibilities: * Design innovative materials and develop in-depth knowledge of organic electronic material properties, synthesis and applications. * Perform design, synthesis, purification, analysis and characterization of small to medium scale organic and/or organometallic compounds. * Coordinate with the rest of the UDC chemistry team to identify and solve synthetic challenges. Implement state-of-the-art synthetic methods to access novel organic and/or organometallic compounds. * Desire to be a part of cutting-edge technology development and application in a dynamic, team-oriented environment. * Stay up to date with scientific literature. * Be able to write and interpret technical information and effectively communicate with peers and management. * Be responsible for certain instrument maintenance and other lab duties. * Collaboration with chemists and engineers to improve materials and devices. Required Qualifications: * PhD in chemistry, materials science, or related field * In depth understanding and proven experience with the synthesis and characterization of organic and organometallic compounds. Demonstrated experience in organometallic chemistry is preferred. * Ability to plan and execute complex multistep syntheses. * Demonstrated understanding of organic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. * Knowledge of modern analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC, UV, IR, TLC) and instrumentation for the isolation and identification of organic compounds. * Experienced in basic computer software and internet applications including: ChemDraw, Origin, MS Office suite. Ability to create scripts for automation or data analysis. * Strong organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines * Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal direction * Ability to perform and succeed in a multi-disciplinary team environment. * Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with peers and management. * Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems in an efficient, proactive manner. * Demonstrated track record of accuracy and thoroughness. Specific to the Position Within the Division of Science and Research, this scientist will conduct and assist in studies related to environmental contaminants with a pronounced focus on PFAS. The scientist will serve as a manager of research contracts and grants developed with internal and external collaborators, will assist in the conceptualization and development of research studies, contract development, conducting field audits, coordinating requests for proposals, and providing technical support to other projects and staff. The scientists will evaluate the occurrence of contaminants of concern in the environment, provide assessment of the risk to human and environmental health, make summary information and data available to other Departmental programs. This person may serve as a technical PFAS point-of-contact for the division to other DEP programs. This scientist will represent the Division on internal and external committees and participate in facilitation of the NJDEP Science Advisory Board. Preferred Skill Set Special consideration will be given to candidates with proven understanding of PFAS in the environment, excellent organization and communication skills, knowledge of principles of modern research and statistical methods, knowledge of essential quality assurance practices, and the ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports. Requirements EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in a field appropriate to the position. NOTE: A Doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the position may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.
