Job DescriptionJob Summary The Assistant Conservator is responsible for the examination, documentation, and treatment of significant textile artworks, including historic Savonnerie carpets, within a gallery setting. This role supports conservation efforts for a major exhibition and ongoing collection care initiatives. The position requires adherence to professional conservation standards while performing treatment work in a public-facing environment. This is a term-limited position with a duration of one year from the date of hire. Primary Responsibilities * Perform conservation treatment of designated carpets in accordance with established ethical and professional standards * Conduct examination, condition reporting, and detailed documentation using appropriate conservation equipment and imaging tools * Carry out treatment work in a public gallery space during open hours while adhering to institutional protocols * Collaborate closely with the supervising textile conservator regarding treatment plans, installation preparation, and storage needs * Participate in exhibition installation alongside conservators, technicians, and art handlers * Perform preventive conservation measures, including routine vacuuming and monitoring * Safely handle, roll, unroll, and reposition large textile works as part of treatment and installation * Maintain conservation tools, supplies, and workspace to ensure safe and effective operations * Perform additional related duties as assigned Requirements & Qualifications Education: Masters degree from a recognized Textile Conservation program Experience: * Minimum two (2) years of experience handling textiles and performing conservation or restoration treatments * Experience or strong understanding of carpet weaving techniques highly recommended Skills & Abilities: * Strong manual dexterity and hand skills required for detailed conservation treatments * Excellent examination and analytical skills with knowledge of conservation methodologies * Basic photography skills and proficiency with imaging software for documentation * Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills * Physical ability to kneel, bend, lift, and perform treatment work on the floor * Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment * Ability to give and receive constructive feedback professionally
