Job Description TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR CDL Class A Required Department: Transportation Reports To: Transportation Manager Supervisory Responsibility: Provides leadership, training, and operational oversight to transportation personnel. POSITION SUMMARY The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for supporting and overseeing the daily operations of the transportation department to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of company products, materials, and equipment. This position combines CDL Class A driving responsibilities with driver supervision, training, dispatch coordination, fleet maintenance oversight, safety compliance, reporting, and operational leadership. The Transportation Supervisor serves as the lead transportation employee and primary backup to the Transportation Manager. In the absence of the Transportation Manager, this position assumes responsibility for transportation operations, including driver scheduling, dispatch, fleet coordination, regulatory compliance, customer service, reporting, and employee supervision. This position plays a critical role in maintaining fleet readiness, developing driver talent, promoting safety, and ensuring exceptional service to both internal and external customers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Transportation Operations • Safely operate CDL Class A vehicles in accordance with all DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, company, and customer requirements., • Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and en-route inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment., • Ensure safe, timely, and accurate transportation and delivery of products and materials., • Maintain accurate logs, trip reports, fuel records, and transportation documentation., • Follow all company policies and safety procedures., • Respond appropriately to transportation emergencies, accidents, and operational disruptions., • Maintain a professional image and represent the company positively when interacting with customers, vendors, and the public. Driver Leadership, Training & Development • Serve as the lead transportation employee and primary resource for drivers., • Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate newly hired drivers., • Conduct driver orientation and onboarding programs., • Train drivers on:, • DOT and FMCSA regulations, • Hours of Service requirements, • Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), • Defensive driving techniques, • Vehicle inspection procedures, • Cargo securement requirements, • Safe operating practices, • Customer service expectations, • Company transportation policies and procedures, • Conduct ride-alongs and performance evaluations., • Monitor driver performance and provide coaching and corrective action recommendations when necessary., • Assist with driver recruitment, onboarding, retention, and development efforts., • Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and safety throughout the transportation department. Dispatch & Logistics Coordination • Serve as backup dispatcher and transportation coordinator., • Assist with route planning, scheduling, and load assignments., • Coordinate driver assignments and transportation resources., • Monitor transportation schedules and delivery performance., • Communicate with drivers regarding schedule changes, customer requirements, and operational updates., • Coordinate with customers, vendors, and internal departments regarding transportation needs., • Resolve transportation issues, delays, route changes, and service concerns., • Support continuous improvement efforts to increase transportation efficiency. Transportation Manager Backup Responsibilities In the absence of the Transportation Manager, the Transportation Supervisor will: • Oversee daily transportation operations., • Supervise transportation personnel., • Manage dispatching and driver assignments., • Coordinate transportation schedules and customer deliveries., • Address customer concerns and service issues., • Ensure transportation operations remain efficient and compliant., • Manage driver communications and scheduling changes., • Coordinate fleet maintenance activities., • Complete required transportation reports., • Monitor compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements., • Provide operational updates and recommendations to management., • Ensure uninterrupted transportation service and customer satisfaction. Fleet Maintenance & Equipment Management • Assist with the management and oversight of the company's transportation fleet., • Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules for trucks, trailers, and transportation equipment., • Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) and ensure timely corrective action., • Schedule repairs and maintenance with internal maintenance personnel and external service providers., • Conduct periodic fleet inspections to ensure equipment readiness and compliance., • Maintain fleet maintenance records and service histories., • Track registrations, permits, inspections, and regulatory requirements., • Monitor fuel consumption, maintenance costs, equipment performance, and downtime., • Assist with equipment replacement planning and capital improvement recommendations., • Ensure all fleet equipment meets safety and operational standards. Reporting & Administrative Responsibilities • Prepare, maintain, and submit transportation department reports., • Track and report key transportation performance indicators., • Maintain records related to:, • Driver training, • Driver certifications, • Fleet maintenance, • Vehicle inspections, • Fuel usage, • Mileage reporting, • Delivery performance, • Hours of Service compliance, • Safety incidents, • DOT compliance documentation, • Assist with transportation payroll documentation and timekeeping., • Maintain accurate transportation records and files., • Support audits, compliance reviews, and regulatory inspections., • Ensure required reports are completed accurately and submitted on time. Safety & Regulatory Compliance • Promote a culture of safety throughout the transportation department., • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company regulations., • Monitor driver compliance with Hours of Service requirements., • Ensure proper use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)., • Conduct safety observations and identify opportunities for improvement., • Participate in accident investigations and corrective action planning., • Support transportation safety meetings and training initiatives., • Maintain readiness for regulatory audits and inspections., • Ensure all driver qualification files remain current and compliant. QUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications • Valid CDL Class A license., • Clean driving record and ability to meet company insurance requirements., • Minimum three (3) years of commercial driving experience., • Strong knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations., • Ability to safely operate commercial motor vehicles and transportation equipment., • Experience using ELD systems and transportation-related technology., • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills., • Ability to train and mentor employees effectively., • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, and Word. Preferred Qualifications • Five (5) or more years of transportation experience., • Previous supervisory, dispatch, transportation coordination, or driver trainer experience., • Experience with fleet maintenance coordination and preventive maintenance programs., • Knowledge of heavy-duty truck and trailer systems., • Experience with transportation management software and GPS tracking systems., • Experience preparing transportation, safety, and compliance reports.
