Job DescriptionSalary: $30-$40 Control Room Operator (ROC Operator) Hydroelectric Generation Location: Latham, NY Position Summary The Control Room Operator (ROC Operator) is responsible for the continuous monitoring, control, and coordination of multiple hydroelectric facilities from a centralized Remote Operations Center (ROC). This role utilizes SCADA, HMI, and PLC systems to ensure the safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant operation of all plant assets. Operating on a 24/7 schedule, the ROC Operator plays a critical role in supporting grid reliability, maintaining environmental compliance, and upholding system safety. The position requires a high level of technical knowledge, situational awareness, and clear communication with both on-site and remote personnel. Key Responsibilities • Monitor real-time plant performance using SCADA, HMI, and remote camera systems., • Remotely operate hydroelectric turbines, generators, gates, and auxiliary systems in accordance with dispatch orders and SOPs., • Execute safe start-up, shutdown, and load-change sequences., • Maintain compliance with license-required flows, environmental regulations, and FERC/NERC standards., • Respond to alarms and abnormal system conditions, initiating timely corrective actions., • Coordinate with field personnel during routine operations, maintenance, and emergencies., • Maintain accurate shift logs, operational records, setpoint changes, and compliance documentation., • Support emergency preparedness efforts and participate in drills (e.g., EAP exercises)., • Ensure compliance with cybersecurity, physical security, and access control procedures., • Contribute to continuous improvement of procedures and system reliability. Required Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and, 1+ years of experience in power plant operations, industrial control systems, or military technical operations and, Experience interpreting technical manuals, one-line diagrams, and operational procedures and, Experience and proficiency with SCADA/HMI systems and computer-based control interfaces and, Strong decision-making ability under pressure. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Availability to work rotating shifts (including overnights, weekends, and holidays). Preferred: • Prior experience in hydroelectric plant operations or centralized control rooms., • Familiarity with FERC, NERC, and dam safety compliance standards., • Associate degree or higher in electrical, mechanical, or related engineering/technical field., • Previous experience with dispatch centers or ROC environments. Work Environment Remote Operations Center (ROC): Climate-controlled control room with large displays, multiple control stations, and redundant systems. Schedule: Rotating or fixed shift schedules based on operational needs. Includes holidays and weekends as part of the 24/7 coverage model. Occasional regional travel to a hydro site for training and development.
