Precision Machinist – CNC Milling / Grinding / Lapping Newport, South Wales | £30,000 – £38,000 | Permanent | Full-time An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Precision Machinist to join a growing advanced manufacturing business in Newport. The successful candidate will have a background in precision CNC machining, grinding or lapping , ideally working with metals, carbide or other hard materials. Technical ceramics experience is not required. Full specialist training will be provided by an experienced ceramics machining specialist. This is an opportunity to develop specialist expertise in precision machining and lapping of technical ceramics for the semiconductor industry. Key Responsibilities Operate CNC milling machinery, including Hurco controls Manufacture tight-tolerance components from engineering drawings and process specifications Carry out precision grinding and lapping to achieve specified surface finish, flatness and parallelism Develop knowledge and practical capability in machining technical ceramics and other hard/brittle materials Select appropriate tooling, abrasives, fixtures and machining parameters Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T and technical specifications Carry out in-process and final inspection Use micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges and surface-finish testing equipment Record machine setups, tooling parameters, machining data and inspection results using digital production systems Capture and document process knowledge and improvements Identify issues early, investigate root causes and implement practical solutions Maintain machinery, tooling and work areas Work safely and maintain high standards of quality and housekeeping Essential Experience Proven experience in precision CNC milling, grinding or lapping Experience machining metals, carbide or other hard materials Strong understanding of machining principles, feeds, speeds and material behaviour Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T and technical specifications Competence with precision measurement and inspection techniques Experience maintaining accurate production/process documentation Proactive, self-motivated approach with the ability to work independently Willingness to undertake intensive training and learn new materials and processes Desirable Technical ceramics experience Experience with alumina, aluminium nitride, zirconia, SiC or other brittle materials Carbide or glass machining Aerospace, semiconductor or medical manufacturing experience Apprenticeship or vocational qualification in machining/mechanical engineering Hurco experience ISO 9001 knowledge Basic CAM programming The Opportunity This is more than a conventional machining position. You'll become part of a growing manufacturing operation and have the opportunity to develop expertise in a specialist and technically demanding area of precision manufacturing . Successful candidates will be highly experienced with running complex 5 axis machining centres, ideally using Mazatrol Smooth operating software. Setting and operating of 5 axis CNC machining centres for the manufacture of high precision, high quality, and low volume machined parts used in the assembly of critical systems supplied to the maritime industry. • Responsible for machining of parts on 5 axis CNC machining centres, • Stropping, lifting and loading materials (use of slings and overhead cranes), • Working to engineering drawings and making CNC programming edits, • Tooling set up, support with program and process improvement activities, • Undertaking program prove out activities, parts measurement and inspection, • Ensuring product quality and conformance to specification, • Perform machine TPM activities and ensure good area housekeeping, • Work safely in line with the companies Health and Safety policy, • High level of competency in setting and operating 5 axis machining centres., • Experience of I.S.O programs, • Understand health & safety environment/procedures, • Working from Engineering drawings, • Use of measuring equipment including verniers, stick mic's & probes, • Setup and machining of castings using dial indicators and probes Indentured apprenticeship or HNC / HND in a highly relevant engineering discipline • CNC programming of parts including program generation, editing offline programme, • Mazatrol program edit and creation, • 5 years (min) engineering experience within the manufacturing industry, • 5 years (min) CNC programming knowledge, • Modern tool cutting knowledge, • CAM experience (Mastercam & Edgecam), • CI experience (Lean 7 wastes), • Safety / 5S work ethic, • Computer literate (Microsoft), • Manual handling, slinging and lifting, and use of cranes up to 3T, • Good communicator with all levels of business (written & verbal), • Ability to drive improvements, • Quality first mindset and ability to follow process and company standards The weekend shift will be on 12hr Days & Nights across Friday, Saturday and Sunday (36hrs).
