Job DescriptionDirector of Credit Policy Location: Onsite - Long Island, NY Industry: Banking / Credit Union Work Structure: Onsite 5 day A financial institution on Long Island is seeking a Director of Credit Policy & Loan Review to lead credit risk oversight across commercial, residential, and consumer lending portfolios. This is a senior-level, judgment-intensive role focused on policy ownership, loan review, and risk governance , not loan origination. The position requires deep credit expertise, executive-level communication skills, and the confidence to challenge risk appropriately. Role Focus • Credit policy ownership and governance, • Loan portfolio risk oversight and review, • Regulatory compliance and audit support, • Executive reporting and risk challenge This role is not involved in loan production. Primary Responsibilities • Own, maintain, and enhance lending policies covering consumer, residential, and commercial credit, • Develop and execute a comprehensive loan review program to assess underwriting quality, documentation, and policy compliance, • Perform ongoing loan portfolio reviews to evaluate credit quality and identify trends, risks, and emerging issues, • Prepare executive-level reports and presentations for senior leadership and board-level committees, • Support the Credit Risk & Fair Lending Committee, including agenda preparation and reporting materials, • Provide effective oversight and independent challenge to underwriting and credit decisions, • Communicate identified deficiencies, inconsistencies, or policy exceptions to appropriate stakeholders, • Partner with lending, underwriting, and loan operations teams to ensure alignment with risk appetite, • Support internal audits, external audits, and regulatory examinations, • Escalate credit risk concerns as appropriate and recommend corrective actions, • Perform managerial and leadership responsibilities inherent to the role, • Complete additional duties and special projects as assigned Portfolio Coverage, • Commercial Lending, • Residential / Mortgage Lending, • Consumer Lending Required Qualifications, • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Accounting, or related field, • Minimum of 7 years of direct credit experience within a bank or credit union, • At least 5 years of experience in credit policy, loan review, underwriting, credit analysis, or related discipline, • Hands-on underwriting experience in commercial and/or residential lending, • Proven experience writing, maintaining, and enforcing lending policies and procedures, • Strong background in credit risk management and loan portfolio oversight, • Ability to clearly articulate credit analysis, risk assessment, and policy rationale, • Polished executive presence with the ability to present findings and challenge decisions confidently, • Experience leading or influencing teams preferred Preferred Experience, • Formal credit risk training or professional certification, • Prior experience supporting regulatory exams and fair lending reviews, • Background in both commercial and consumer credit environments Work Environment & Expectations, • Primarily onsite role with limited hybrid flexibility, • High level of independent judgment and accountability, • Fast-paced, risk-focused environment requiring attention to detail and decisiveness, • Regular interaction with senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, • Not suited for candidates requiring extensive oversight or hand-holding Ready to Take the Next Step?
