Job Description JOB TITLE: Assistant General Manager REPORTS TO: Feedlot General Manager FLSA STATUS: Salaried, Ag Exempt FUNCTION: The Assistant General Manager (AGM) supports the Feedlot General Manager in overseeing daily feedyard operations, ensuring cattle performance, employee safety, and operational efficiency. This position provides leadership and direction to the management team, drives execution of company goals, and ensures compliance with Five Rivers standards and regulatory requirements. The AGM acts as the key operational leader in the General Manager’s absence, maintaining the continuity of feedyard operations and team engagement. Key Responsibilities: Operational Leadership • Partner with the General Manager to oversee feedyard operations, including cattle health, feeding, maintenance, and environmental compliance., • Direct and support 5–6 subordinate managers across key operational areas, ensuring goals are met for cattle performance, feed utilization, and production costs., • Lead daily and weekly operational meetings to monitor performance metrics, animal health, and resource utilization., • Oversee accounting, financial reporting, and compliance with GAAP and industry-specific requirements., • Ensure accurate cost accounting for feed, yardage, animal health, and other production expenses., • Manage cash flow, working capital, and financing structures to support cattle procurement and feed supply., • Promote a strong safety culture by modeling safe work practices and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and company policies., • Conduct regular safety meetings and audits, promptly addressing hazards or noncompliance issues., • Coordinate the purchase of commodities including feed ingredients, supplements, and roughage in alignment with facility needs and company guidelines., • Maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure consistent quality and cost-effective sourcing., • Identify finished cattle ready for market on a weekly basis and coordinate shipments to packers., • Support the General Manager in monitoring feedyard performance through financial, operational, and animal performance reports., • Assist in developing and executing cost-control initiatives and process improvements., • Maintain professional knowledge through ongoing education, workshops, and participation in industry organizations., • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Ag Economics, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience., • Minimum of 3 years of feedlot or cattle management experience., • Supervisory or management experience required., • Knowledge of livestock production, feed management, and animal health best practices., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and basic accounting concepts., • Valid driver’s license required., • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills., • Operational Excellence – Demonstrates knowledge of feedyard systems, cattle health, and production efficiency., • Leadership & Development – Builds strong teams, coaches effectively, and models professional behavior., • Decision Quality – Exercises sound judgment and accountability in complex operational situations., • Safety & Compliance Mindset – Champions a culture of safety and regulatory adherence., • Business Acumen – Understands the economics of cattle feeding, budgeting, and cost control., • Primary work performed in feedyard and office settings, with exposure to outdoor and agricultural environments., • Regular interaction with cattle, horses, vehicles, and heavy equipment in all weather conditions., • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, kneel, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs., • Regularly exposed to outdoor elements including heat, cold, dust, and precipitation., • Must be able to work safely around livestock and equipment.
