Job Description ABOUT RED HOOK INITIATIVE (RHI) Red Hook Initiative (RHI) is a community-based nonprofit working to improve the lives of the more than 6,500 residents of Red Hook Houses, Brooklyn's largest public housing complex. RHI believes that the social change to overcome systemic inequities begins with empowered youth, and that change in communities should come from within. In partnership with community adults, we nurture young people in Red Hook to be inspired, resilient, and healthy, and to envision themselves as co-creators of their lives, community, and society. Red Hook Farms, a project of Red Hook Initiative, is a youth-centered urban farming and food justice program in Red Hook, Brooklyn. JOB SUMMARY RHI seeks a Community Health Worker (CHW) to support the Food as Medicine program. The CHW will oversee program enrollment, support with produce pick up, and plan workshops and activities for program participants related to community building, healthy eating, and supporting individuals with chronic illness. The CHW will split their time between RHI's office and the Columbia Street Farm and should be prepared to spend most of the day on their feet and work outdoors in inclement weather as needed. Candidates must be willing to work Saturdays, June-November. The Food as Medicine program provides $25 weekly vouchers for 30 food-insecure and/or chronically ill households in Red Hook to use at the Red Hook Farm Stand June-November. This program was developed in partnership with the Red Hook Community Health Network as a way to increase access to fresh produce, fruit, and eggs while also reducing the economic burden caused by high food costs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES Food as Medicine Program ● Conduct outreach and enrollment for the Food as Medicine program. ● Provide ongoing support to Food as Medicine participants throughout the June-November program season by sending weekly reminder texts/calls and managing enrollment and attendance issues. ● Maintain program participation and survey records. ● Assist with weekly produce pick up at the Columbia Street Farm on Saturdays from 10-2pm (June-November). ● Plan engagement opportunities/workshops at the Columbia Street Farm and other neighborhood locations that emphasize healthy eating and healthy lifestyle habits for those with chronic illness. ● Support the Community Nutritionist with weekly food demonstrations at the Columbia Street Farm. ● Oversee program evaluation, survey distribution, and yearly reporting for Food as Medicine program. Food-Related Social Needs ● Provide connection and referrals to dietary support programs and resources such as: ○ Medically tailored meals ○ Food prescriptions ○ Fresh produce and non-perishable groceries ○ Cooking supplies and kitchenware ● Collaborate with the Community Nutritionist to schedule 1:1 nutrition counseling sessions for residents. May be assigned other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Red Hook Community Health Network Manager. Job Description Director of Education and Formation (Children and Families) Location: The Riverside Church in the City of New York (New York, NY) Reports to: Minister of Intergenerational Christian Education & Formation Department: Education Scheduled Work Week: Full Time 35 hrs Salary Range: $70,000 to $80,000 JOB SUMMARY: Serving as an integral part of the Education and Formation Team, the Director provides pastoral leadership, management, intergenerational worship, and program planning for the entire Riverside Church community including children, youth, families and adults of all ages with a primary focus on children and families. This individual brings a diverse set of skills to a multi-faceted range of responsibilities that cross musical, educational, developmental, liturgical, generational, ecumenical, and demographic boundaries. This person embodies the best practices of education and worship to facilitate spaces and experiences that invite children and families to engage the Riverside Church and our faith to their fullest potential. The Director collaborates with the Education and Formation Team to create a long-term vision for children and families at The Riverside Church and their integration into the full life of the worshiping community. This person also inspires a team of lay leaders, childcare workers, adult volunteers, and Education Commission members to partner in this vision and enact it on a large scale. Finally, the Director advocates, along with the Education and Formation Team, for the further inclusion of children and families and their needs in worship, bringing the ministry into the 21st century of progressive educational thought and practice. Essential Job Responsibilities • Implement curriculum and materials that enrich the faith formation of preschoolers and school-aged children., • Help create worship experiences founded in best practices of play, exploration, and discovery., • Co-create, with the Minister for Intergenerational Christian Education and Formation and the Director of Youth and College/Early Career Adults, faith formation experiences in addition to church school and Sunday morning worship that serve to help children connect to the Bible, the way of Jesus, other Christians, other forms of spirituality, and other faith traditions., • Provide opportunities for integrating children and adults in healthy, mutually beneficial intergenerational contexts, such as Family Worship, Children’s Sabbath, and the Family Christmas Eve service., • Explore new and fresh ways to make children and families feel more comfortable in corporate worship experiences., • Ensure education volunteers and staff follow church Safe Sanctuary policies. Family Engagement • Work with the Minister of Intergenerational Christian Education & Formation to create a robust support system for parents and guardians., • Design monthly gatherings to promote family interconnectedness and relationship building., • Explore new and fresh ways to engage families during the summer months., • Develop and sustain existing partnerships with community organizations that advocate for justice issues that impact children and families., • Develop and sustain programming that engages the children in our New York City neighborhood, such as the Harvest Festival., • Explore possibilities for summer engagement of area children with Riverside children. Collaboration • Partner with the worship team to create worship experiences in the nave that enrich the faith formation of children and families., • Utilize gifts of writing, music, and storytelling to communicate the gospel in intergenerational ways., • Partner with the Minister of Social Justice to educate children and families on the importance of justice work., • Create pathways toward activism and service that are appropriate for children and families., • Partner with the Minister of Parish Care to facilitate counseling and care for children and families., • Communicate with Directors of children’s choirs to facilitate transitions between education, choir, and worship participation., • Partner with the ministry to older adults to create connections between age groups., • Partner with the Director of Youth and College/Early Career Adults on children and youth worship planning and implementation. Leadership and Management • Recruit a strong team of educational leaders for church school and other Riverside programming for children and families., • Provide leadership, development, and direction for church school leaders and other adults who volunteer with programming., • Provide leadership and management for summer staff, • Provide leadership and management for childcare staff hired to serve in the nursery and preschool areas., • Evaluate lay and employed staff and volunteers., • Create a space where our youngest congregants feel safe and welcomed., • M.Div. degree (or comparable graduate education) and minimum five (5) years of experience in this area., • Educational or teaching experience with children of varying ages, abilities, demographics, and backgrounds., • Teaching or pastoral experience in a congregation with a multi-cultural membership and diverse staff., • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal., • Demonstrated ability to interact in a collaborative manner with other ministries and staff., • Superb skill in administration, budgeting, and staff supervision., • Theological understanding consistent with the core values of the Riverside Church.
