Job Description Job Title: Medical Assistant - Operating Room Reports to: Operating Room Team Lead FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Summary: As a Medical Assistant in the Operating Room (OR), you will play a crucial role in supporting our physicians and clinical staff in delivering exceptional patient care. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks within the operating room environment, aimed at ensuring smooth operations and patient comfort throughout fertility procedures. Required Duties and Responsibilities: * Preoperative Preparation: Assist in preparing the operating room for procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are sterile and readily available. This may include setting up surgical trays, sterilizing instruments, and preparing the patient for surgery. * Patient Support: Provide compassionate care and support to patients undergoing fertility procedures. Comfort patients, address their concerns, and ensure they are adequately prepared both physically and emotionally for their surgery. * Assistance During Procedures: Assist physicians and clinical staff during fertility procedures, including but not limited to egg retrieval, embryo transfer, and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide assistance as required. * Instrumentation and Equipment Management: Maintain an inventory of surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring they are properly sterilized, organized, and in good working condition. Assist in the setup and breakdown of equipment before and after procedures. * Sterilization and Infection Control: Adhere to strict sterilization protocols and infection control measures to maintain a safe and hygienic operating room environment. Follow established guidelines for handling and disposing of biohazardous materials. * Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately document patient information, procedure details, and any other relevant data in electronic medical records (EMR) systems. Ensure all documentation is complete, legible, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. * Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and ensure a seamless workflow in the operating room. Communicate effectively to relay important information and updates. * Emergency Response: Remain vigilant and prepared to assist in emergency situations that may arise during procedures. Follow established protocols for responding to medical emergencies and providing immediate assistance to patients and staff. * Continuing Education: Stay informed about advances in fertility treatment techniques, surgical procedures, and best practices in operating room management. Participate in training programs and continuing education opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge. Education/Experience: * High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a medical assistant program preferred. * Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is highly desirable. * Prior experience working in a surgical or procedural setting, preferably in a fertility clinic or reproductive medicine practice. Skills: * Strong knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, and sterile techniques. * Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients and healthcare providers. * Attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. * Commitment to patient confidentiality, safety, and quality of care. * Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed. Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office, internet software and proprietary software. Computer skills include the ability to use spreadsheet and word processing programs at a highly proficient level. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
