Job Description Title: Porter Agency/Program: Freedom Village Status: Non-Exempt, Part Time Hours Per Week: 7-10 hours per week Salary: $27,000 per year Supervisor: Superintendent Start Date: TBD Benefits Package: Matched Retirement Plan, Paid vacation, Sick days, Personal days, Paid National Holidays, and more. Travel: Five days on-site per week and as needed. About Barrier Free Living (BFL) Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community. Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and nonresidential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence, transitional shelter to the disabled homeless, and outreach to physically disabled individuals with mental health and/or chemical addiction issues. Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services. About Freedom Village Freedom Village is a 74-unit permanent supportive housing residence operated by BFL. Located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the program serves survivors of domestic violence with disabilities and frail elderly individuals (55+), offering a fully accessible and trauma-informed environment. Residents receive comprehensive on-site services including case management, counseling, and occupational therapy to promote safety, healing, and long-term stability. Role Summary The Porter is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of Freedom Village, a supportive housing facility serving domestic violence survivors and individuals with disabilities. The Porter ensures that the building’s common areas, exterior grounds, and service areas are clean, well-maintained, and presentable at all times. This role is essential to promoting a welcoming, hygienic, and dignified environment for all residents, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities * Clean and sanitize building common areas including lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, laundry rooms, and offices * Sweep, mop, vacuum, and disinfect floors; remove trash and recyclables from common areas and designated collection points * Empty the compactor machine daily, ensuring the compactor room remains clean * Sort recyclables and put out trash on collection days in their designated locations * Maintain cleanliness of outdoor areas, including front entrances, sidewalks, ramps, and courtyard areas * Perform routine cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch surfaces and restrooms in accordance with health and safety protocols * Monitor building supply inventory and notify supervisor when supplies are low or equipment needs repair * Assist with snow removal, salting, and general weather-related maintenance as needed * Set up and break down spaces for meetings or community events as directed * Report maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly to supervisor * Skilled in using hand trucks, dollies, and other equipment facilitate the movement of items within the building(s) * Support staff in maintaining a trauma-informed, respectful, and resident-centered environment * Respond to urgent clean-up needs in a timely and professional manner * Assist super with other duties as needed Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent * Prior experience in the field of general maintenance and cleaning * Experience working in a residential/shelter setting is preferred * Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds at a time * Ability to use hand tools and power tools * Ability to work with diverse populations including people with disabilities and those who are D/deaf and Hard of Hearing * Bilingual English-Spanish and/or American Sign Language (ASL) preferred * Ability to work within a team * Good communication skills * Computer literate Equal Opportunity Employer BFL provides equal employment opportunity to all applicants, with employment based upon personal capabilities and qualifications without discrimination because of race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, pregnancy, alienage or citizenship status, marital status, creed, genetic disposition or carrier status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other protected characteristic as established by law.
