Job Description Job Title: Animal Transporter Job Summary The Animal Transporter is responsible for the safe, humane, and timely transport of animals to and from shelters, foster homes, adopters, veterinary appointments, events, and other designated locations. This role requires strong animal-handling skills, safe driving practices, and clear communication with staff, volunteers, and adopters. The Animal Transporter helps represent the organization in the community and ensures that all animals are transported in a manner that prioritizes their welfare, comfort, and safety. General Accountabilities * Safely transport dogs, cats, and other animals between shelters, foster homes, adopters, veterinary clinics, events, and transport hubs. • Load and unload animals in crates or on leashes, ensuring secure placement in the vehicle and minimizing stress or risk of injury per SCR’s safety protocols of double leashing and fear free techniques., • Monitor animals during transport for signs of distress, illness, or injury and report any concerns to the appropriate staff member immediately., • Follow all organizational protocols for animal handling, safety, sanitation, and emergency procedures while in transit., • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized vehicle environment, including regular cleaning and disinfecting of crates and transport areas as directed., • Communicate professionally and promptly with staff, fosters, adopters, and volunteers regarding pick-up/drop-off times, delays, or changes in schedule., • Accurately document transports as required (e.g., logs, forms, digital records) and submit any necessary paperwork or updates after each trip., • Represent the organization positively in public, providing courteous and respectful interactions with partners, adopters, and community members., • Support occasional assistance at events or clinics related to transport (e.g., helping unload/load animals, basic set-up or breakdown) as needed., • Comply with all traffic laws, organizational policies, and insurance/safety requirements at all times while driving on behalf of the organization. Qualifications * Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record, and ability to meet the organization’s insurance/driver eligibility requirements. • Must have a clean and safe vehicle, preferably a SUV., • Prior experience handling animals (dogs and cats required), including comfort with a variety of sizes, breeds, and temperaments., • Fear free certification (may be obtained post-hire), but within 30 days and and other certifications as needed by NYS for animal care staff., • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds, move crates, and handle animals safely on leash., • Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to follow schedules, routes, and instructions with minimal supervision., • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact professionally with staff, volunteers, adopters, and partners., • Ability to remain calm, patient, and safety-focused in busy or stressful situations (e.g., loading multiple animals, traffic, schedule changes)., • Basic comfort using a smartphone or other device for navigation, communication, and simple record-keeping (texts, email, apps, or forms)., • Familiarity with local and highway driving in the NYC/tri-state area preferred., • Prior animal shelter, rescue, veterinary, or transport experience is preferred but not required.
