ROAR is a new alternatives-to-detention/incarceration (ATD/ATI) that serves individuals of all genders, aged 16 to 27, with challenges in the community (including substance use problems); this program will directly help reduce the utilization of jails and prisons. We are seeking a Court Advocate for our Brooklyn ROAR team, who will join a multidisciplinary team comprised of a Team Leader, Senior Coach, Wellness Coach, Activities and Engagement Specialist, and Program Assistant. The ROAR team provides supportive case management and linkage to services aimed towards behavior modification. The role of the Court Advocate is to provide a link between the court and the ROAR program staff; this position will deliver ongoing updates to the court regarding ROAR participants’ progress and will communicate information from the court to their ROAR teammates and the participants. Expected to provide cross borough court coverage as needed. This position requires flexibility as court dates, call times and locations vary. In-person court appearances are expected. Approximately 25% of new admissions per year to the NYC jail system will receive care on the mental health service. The service strives to provide safe, holistic and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for the diverse range of mental health issues that face the population, from serious mental illness to the natural struggles that accompany incarceration. The service provides some of the most comprehensive and unique treatment modalities in the country, including specialty housing units for individuals with serious mental illness, a 24-hour on-call psychiatric service, robust creative arts programming, a strong DBT training program, clinics in each of the facilities, substance use treatment, integrated re-entry services, and relationships with multiple training institutions throughout the city. The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the clinical integrity of the specific program or housing area to which they are assigned, including ensuring that all clinicians are providing appropriate and timely clinical interventions and documentation. Depending on the treatment area, s/he manages patient admissions and discharges, monitors and engages in treatment, oversees quality assurance, manages on-going training and education for treatment-area staff, and performs other managerial administrative tasks including liaising with DOC. Summary of position The Supervising Psychiatrist is a psychiatric leader of a facility, clinical area, or program and works in close collaboration with the Mental Health Unit Chief, Clinical Supervisors, and Senior Psychiatrist (if applicable) to ensure that safe, holistic, and evidence-based psychiatric care is provided to incarcerated patients with varying levels of mental health needs. A team-based approach to care is critical; one that incorporates all relevant mental health and medical disciplines as well as security staff. A major component of this position will be training, recruiting and retaining high quality staff and providing strong leadership and mentorship for existing staff. Responsibilities Include (depending on location): • Ensure the highest possible quality of mental health care both in the facility and in collaboration with the other jail facilities in the system. What you will be doing: • Provide supervision and community-based services to a caseload of pretrial participants., • Rapidly (within 24-48 hours of release) conduct Supervision., • Introduction/Orientation meetings with new participants to review supervision conditions, the reporting schedule (as assigned by level of recidivism risk), and the mandatory methods of communication (face-to-face, telephone, and texts) that will be required under the participant’s supervision plan., • Work collaboratively with the court and other pretrial staff team to facilitate and ensure caseload participants’ successful completion of mandated supervision appointments and court appearances during the pendency of their legal case., • Review legal and court screening documentation and work with participants to analyze their offending behavior patterns, identifying behavioral changes, need for implementation of supports that may reduce likelihood of any pretrial arrests., • On an ongoing basis, conduct service need assessments with participants to examine psychosocial needs and problems, including the severity of mental and substance use disorders, problems affecting participation, engagement, and continuity in supervision and treatment and individual motivation for treatment., • Link participants to treatment based on their eligibility, preferences and needs and provide escort to community services., • Help ensure we maintain a safe working environment by reporting any hazards or unsafe conditions, e.g., liquid spill in hallway, to the appropriate facilities staff member or supervisor., • Any other duties as required by the Program Director and other supervisory staff.
