Job Description Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 28,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer). MRNY is a newly unionized workplace. MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more." Current Opening: MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Adult Literacy Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes and Civics classes. The person in this role will work 20 hours/week and provide case management support to Adult Literacy students. Key Responsibilities but not limited to: • Provide case management support to ESOL students following a process to include class presentations/surveying, individualized assessment, referral making, and follow up to resolve cases. This includes connecting students to programs they may be eligible for and screening and enrolling families into childcare programs including 3k and prek., • Utilize student’s Individualized Service Plans (ISPs) created by teachers to help understand student’s goals, strengths and needs., • Consistently meet with students individually to discuss needs/goals the students have identified. Report case management interaction in funder required databases., • Refer to and update consistently the resource materials we have that outline available services for our NYC based offices, • Stay updated on the shifting focuses of MRNY’s services work as well as what cases can and cannot be referred internally and what the best options are for case follow up, • Network with community based organizations/service providers to build our understanding of and capacity to connect students with other resources, work job training programs, higher education and job counseling services, financial counseling and support services, • Coordinate and facilitate workshops focused on themes that support the communities we serve including Know Your Rights workshops, etc, • Assist in program development by participating in on-going reflection and change making process, • Attend case management team meetings convened by the Lead Case Manager/Case Manager Supervisor, • Reporting responsibilities include case management time tracking and reporting on a monthly basis, case management notes, workshop schedules and attendance in Salesforce, ASISTS, Connect and other funder required databases., • Support program intake related activities including student information sessions, appointment scheduling, student registrations, student orientations, student file management, and attendance related tasks., • Administer BEST Plus tests as needed during intake, late intake and post-testing time periods, • Support student retention efforts by following-up with absent students as needed to ensure their continued participation and working closely with the teachers and administrative staff to enforce program attendance policy in a way that is supportive for the students., • Attend program administrative trainings for updates on new administrative procedures and Salesforce updates., • Eligible to work in the U.S, • HS Diploma from the US or another country, • Fully bilingual (Spanish and English) REQUIRED, • Strong digital literacy skills with GSuite, Microsoft Office, Box, Zoom, and Google Voice, • Occasional travel to other MRNY offices required, • Regular evenings and occasional weekends required, • Possess a commitment to collective action and community organizing., • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail, • Be highly professional and team oriented with a passion for excellence and eagerness to help the department meet our goals., • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment., • Ability to work under pressure required., • Have a working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and using a database (ideally Salesforce) to run reports., • Strong verbal and written communication skills, • Take a strengths-based perspective as a team member and supporter of individual students., • Utilize solid listening skills, and some level of skill in the following (and a commitment to developing those skills in an ongoing way): informal counseling skills, individualized needs assessment skills, case management skills, and skills for researching and developing new services referral sources. Will attend training in 2024 for mental health first aid skills., • Contribute to data gathering and entry as part of grants management work for the contracts funding their work MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days.
