Job Description Maverick Management Corp (and through its affiliates) owns, manages, and leases real estate (primarily retail, with some office and residential) predominantly in the eastern United States, but also in the south, mid-west, and west. We are currently seeking a highly experienced Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations. Position Overview The Controller will oversee all aspects of corporate and property-level accounting for our multi-state real estate portfolio. Reporting directly to senior leadership (or CFO equivalent), this role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance, strong internal controls, budgeting, cash management, and support for property operations. The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional with deep expertise in real estate accounting, including tenant reconciliations, CAM charges, tax billing, and lease-related financials. Primary Responsibilities • Oversee the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including P&L reports, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and variance analysis for the portfolio., • Manage and supervise all property accounting functions, including tenant account reconciliations, CAM reconciliations and billings, real estate tax allocations and billings, insurance premium recoveries, security deposit accounting, and accrued interest calculations., • Lead the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections; monitor variances and implement corrective actions to protect NOI and financial performance., • Ensure accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts/disbursements, and general ledger activities using Spectra (or similar property management software)., • Prepare and review tenant statements, late charge assessments, and legal review billings; handle delinquency resolution and collections oversight., • Oversee year-end processes, including 1099 preparation for vendors, audit coordination, and compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements., • Serve as the primary point for financial reporting to ownership, lenders, and external auditors; provide strategic insights on portfolio performance., • Maintain internal controls, safeguard assets, and ensure proper insurance coverage valuation and property scheduling., • Act as backup and mentor to accounting staff (including Real Estate Accountants); supervise payroll tax returns, Use & Occupancy filings, and related compliance as needed., • Manage special projects, such as acquisitions/dispositions financial due diligence, system implementations, or process improvements., • Collaborate with property management, leasing, and executive teams to support operational decisions and growth initiatives. Qualifications and Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master's or MBA preferred)., • Active CPA license is required (essential for this senior role due to financial oversight, compliance, and audit responsibilities)., • Minimum 8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in real estate accounting (property management, commercial/retail portfolios preferred)., • Proven leadership experience supervising accounting teams and managing multi-property portfolios., • Strong knowledge of real estate-specific accounting (CAM, tenant recoveries, lease compliance, tax/insurance billings, security deposits)., • Proficiency in property management software (Spectra for Windows highly preferred), QuickBooks, advanced Excel (pivot tables, financial modeling), Word, and general ledger systems., • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to present complex financial data clearly to non-finance stakeholders., • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines., • Experience with audits, internal controls, GAAP compliance, and regulatory filings (e.g., 1099s, property taxes). Compensation and Benefits The expected salary range for this salaried position is $150,000 to $200,000 annually, commensurate with skills, relevant experience, CPA credentials, and market conditions (higher end for candidates with extensive retail real estate leadership and multi-state portfolio expertise).
