Hello! At Factorial, we're looking for an Engineering Manager who wants to get their hands dirty - someone who leads teams but stays close to the work, understands the domain deeply, and cares about shipping things that actually matter. We're at an interesting moment. AI isn't a feature we're adding to our product - it's changing how the product works. That means rethinking how we design and build software from the ground up, moving from deterministic systems to AI-powered workflows that help real businesses run better every day. It's genuinely hard, and it's genuinely exciting. If you're someone who gets energy from working closely with the business, growing engineers around you, and using AI not as a buzzword but as a real tool to build better products faster - we'd love to meet you. Our Engineering team is the engine behind Factorial, crafting the tech that makes HR simple, fast, and reliable for thousands of companies. If you love solving hard problems and want to build something that truly matters, come build it with us. We're a team of 200+ Product Engineers building Business Management solution that actually works for the people using it. Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React but the interesting work right now is what we're building on top of that: agentic workflows, LLM-integrated features, systems that behave probabilistically rather than deterministically. We believe that strong fundamentals, adaptability, and the ability to leverage modern tools, including AI are what truly matter . • You've managed people before and helped engineers grow, ideally beyond your own level., • You've been part of hiring processes and have a track record of bringing strong people into your teams., • You're comfortable working across teams and contributing to shared platform and service foundations., • You engage in honest, Socratic discussions focused on finding the best solution, not winning the argument., • 5+ years as a Full-stack engineer or similar role., • 3+ years leading engineering teams., • Strong experience designing APIs (REST, GraphQL, etc.) and building integrations., • You understand scalability, performance, and quality as real constraints and have dealt with them in production. Being a great Engineering Manager at Factorial means caring about more than the code. You understand the business context behind what you're building and can connect technical decisions to real outcomes for customers and the company. • You're curious about how the business works and use that understanding to make better technical calls., • You push your team to understand the problem deeply before jumping to solutions., • You think in terms of customer value, not just technical deliverables., • You're comfortable talking to stakeholders, asking hard questions, and challenging assumptions when something doesn't add up., • You know when to ship something imperfect and when to slow down and get it right. We expect Engineering Managers to lead teams building AI-powered products, not just use AI tools on the side. • You treat AI as a core part of modern software engineering, not something you bolt on at the end., • You've built or contributed to AI-powered features or workflows that made it to production., • You know what good AI development looks like in practice: defining behaviour and success criteria before you build, measuring output quality, grounding systems in real data, designing workflows that can take safe and auditable actions, and knowing when to keep humans in the loop., • You use AI-assisted tools to move faster in your day-to-day, whether that's coding, testing, debugging, or documentation., • You can help your team review, validate, and safely ship AI-generated code and behaviours., • You understand the real limitations of LLM-based systems: hallucinations, evaluation challenges, data sensitivity., • You create space for experimentation and fast learning loops within your team., • You spot opportunities where AI can genuinely simplify something complex and create real value for users., • You'll start with a buddy who guides you through some non-critical tasks to get comfortable with the codebase., • You'll learn the business, the full customer journey, and work with the team to draft a roadmap., • You'll join weekly team meetings to discuss priorities and bring new ideas to the table., • You'll review the RFCs your team produces, give feedback, and push for the best way to get things done., • You'll hire as the team grows, making sure we bring in people who are both talented and good-hearted., • You'll constantly look for ways to improve how the team works., • You'll run weekly 1:1s focused on the development and well-being of each person on your team., • You'll work with other engineering managers to coordinate initiatives that cut across teams., • You'll help lead the shift to AI-native product development, not by mandating tools, but by setting the example, asking the right questions, and creating the space for your team to experiment and learn., • You'll convince or get convinced. You'll hear that a lot. At Factorial, we believe the best products are built when people come together, in person to collaborate, challenge ideas, and move fast. That’s why our Engineering Teams follows an office-first, flexible schedule . We work on-site several days a week , using that time to connect, align, and innovate as a team. However, we also understand the importance of focus and flexibility, so we support remote work when it makes sense - whether for deep work, personal needs, or just a change of scenery. This balance helps us stay agile, creative, and closely connected, while giving everyone the space to do their best work. At Factorial we don’t evaluate you by years of experience but by your knowledge and skills. We use our Career Path with a rubric framework where we define what is expected for each experience level and skill. This framework allows you to know your current level and what you need to keep growing. We love transparency, so our Career Path includes the salaries for each level, which we share during the first interview to ensure alignment. • Intro Call → Chat with our Talent Partner about your journey and goals., • Hiring Manager Interview → Deep dive into your product mindset, teamwork, and problem-solving., • Live Challenge → A collaborative technical exercise based on real-life problems., • Final Coffee Chat → A relaxed conversation with our CTO & VP of Engineering to explore our vision, culture, and your growth. And that’s it! Feel free to request any other conversations you want, with team members or to address specific concerns at any time in the process. The whole process is remote, using videoconferencing tools! At Factorial, we’re building the leading AI Business Management Software for companies of all sizes. Our platform centralizes key workflows across HR, Finance, Talent, Operations, and IT, freeing teams from manual processes so they can focus on what really matters: leading, growing, and taking care of their people. With over 1,500 employees across Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. We are one of Europe’s fastest-growing SaaS companies, proudly headquartered in Barcelona. If you're excited to shape the future of business management technology, we’d love to meet you. We believe in diverse talent: we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and strongly encourage people of diverse experiences and identities to apply. We believe in inclusion: we are committed to equal opportunities and actively promote workplace inclusion of people with disabilities. If you would like to learn more about our inclusive recruitment processes, you are welcome to indicate so optionally and we will share additional information with you. • We own it: We take responsibility for every project. We make decisions, not excuses., • We learn and teach: We’re dedicated to learning something new every day and, above all, share it., • We partner: Every decision is a team decision. We trust each other., • We grow fast: We act fast. We think that the worst mistake is not learning from them. Wanna learn more about us? Hello! Do you want to help us redefine how AI powers the future of Business Management software, not as an add-on, but as a core part of how people work, decide and grow? We’re a team of 200+ Product Engineers building Business Management solution that actually works for the people using it. Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React but the interesting work right now is what we’re building on top of that: agentic workflows, LLM-integrated features, systems that behave probabilistically rather than deterministically. To keep the Factorial application running 24/7, ensure its performance, scalability and security, as well as research improvements to enable Product Engineers to develop new use cases adding value to our customers. • 8+ years of Software/Systems Engineering experience, with 5+ years as Cloud SRE, • Solid experience monitoring and troubleshooting large-scale cloud deployments, • Hands-on with Terraform or Ansible for IaC, • Observability experience with Datadog, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry, • Proficiency with AWS or Azure, • Someone able to debug issues in Kubernetes clusters, • Experience managing large MySQL clusters with HA configuration, • Someone who breaks down complex problems into clear, shareable elements, • Someone who enjoys mentoring and helping others grow, • Someone who can communicate professionally in English Please note this is not a backend or frontend Software Engineering role. As a Staff Engineer you’ll lead technical discussions and provide guidance to more junior engineers on best practices and coding standards. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of features. Identify and troubleshoot software defects and implement effective solutions. You will be a product-centric engineer, taking ownership of big initiatives, and being interested in the outcome, not just the output. About the outcome, you’ll also work with your team members to establish goals and plan a quarterly roadmap, putting special attention to the technical needs of our domain. You will review code, and get feedback on your own code. You will learn from the entire team, both on technical topics (performance, architecture…) and core skills, in an environment driven by engineering quality. You will share your knowledge, through the RFCs you write, pairing sessions, our mentoring programme or the occasional appearance in the monthly Tech All Hands. At Factorial, we believe the best products are built when people come together, in person to collaborate, challenge ideas, and move fast. As we love transparency, our Career Path includes the salaries for each level and we share it during the first interview to make sure we’re aligned. • Intro Call - Chat with our Talent Partner about your journey, current goals. We’ll be comparing our expectations and making sure we match on a human level., • Hiring Manager Interview - We’ll deep dive into your product mindset, teamwork, and problem-solving. Similarly to the first one, this is about making sure we are a fit and can work together., • Technical Interview with our Factorial engineers. We'll provide an incident situation and we expect you to guide us through it like you normally would., • One last coffee-chat with our VP of Engineering, where you can get all the answers about Factorial’s culture, business vision, or anything else that interests you. The whole process is remote, using videoconferencing tools! At Factorial, we’re building the leading AI Business Management Software for companies of all sizes. Hello! Do you want to help us build the platform that connects Factorial to the rest of the software world, with strong engineering foundations today and AI as a growing part of how we work tomorrow? We're looking for engineers who: - Care about the maturity and quality of what they ship, more than the specific stack they use - Care about whether the thing they built actually worked — not what their title says. Ready to be part of the challenge? About the team Our Engineering team is the engine behind Factorial, crafting the tech that makes HR simple, fast, and reliable for thousands of companies. If you love solving hard problems and want to build something that truly matters, come build it with us. We're a team of 200+ Product Engineers building a Business Management solution that actually works for the people using it. Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React, though we're open to engineers from other stacks — what matters most to us is the maturity of your development practice. The API & Integrations team addresses particular challenges at Factorial. We sit at the intersection between product and platform. We own product surface while we also design developer experiences for internal and external developers of integrations. - We build tools for Factorial product teams to publish in our extensive public API. - We build an integrations framework to achieve the best user experience and developer experience when using integrations. Several Factorial products are already using this framework, and we keep expanding it. - We enable our developer partners to extend Factorial and live the best developer experience. With the acquisition of YepCode, we're laying the groundwork to bring AI further into how we build integrations. Our mission is not only to unblock markets that rely on a fragmented market of different external software (payroll software solutions, ERPs, cloud-based identity services, etc.), but also to lower the barrier so that anybody (even HR managers) is able to create new integrations. What You'll Do As an engineer on the API & Integrations team, your main focus will be owning the development of our public API and integrations framework end-to-end, from problem definition and system design to shipping, monitoring, and iteration in production. You will: - Own systems end-to-end From problem definition and system design to shipping, monitoring and iteration in production. - Collaborate closely with Product and Design Shape how the API and integrations framework serve real user needs, not just isolated technical components. - Work with a real cross-product consistency challenge: keeping the same user and integration experience across verticals (ATS, payroll, ERPs...), all tied to Factorial's design system and transparent to every product team. - Stay close to our customers We have a strong customer-centric mindset: engineers regularly join customer calls, reviews, and feedback sessions to deeply understand real workflows, pain points, and constraints, ensuring we build the right solutions to real problems, not assumptions. - Share knowledge and raise the bar Mentor peers, document learnings, and contribute to Factorial's engineering best practices. - Take ownership of AI as it takes shape As we build on the YepCode acquisition, you won't be joining a finished AI roadmap, you'll be one of the people defining it: AI Skills, evaluation frameworks (Evals), RAG, and agentic workflows are all still taking shape, and we want someone who wants to build them, not just use them. What are we looking for? Your title matters less than your mindset. You might be mid, senior, or staff. What we care about is: - Development maturity: you write solid, well-tested, production-grade code and can be trusted to own a system end-to-end - Proven impact: shipped projects, side projects, or contributions that made a measurable difference - Product-first thinking: you design complete experiences, not just isolated components - Speed & adaptability: you experiment, learn, and iterate fast - An abstraction mindset: real experience working with legacy/monolithic systems, with a track record of thinking in reusable, generic frameworks and components that serve multiple teams and languages, abstracting and generalizing solutions for multiple cases, rather than one-off, product-specific fixes. Bonus points if you've worked with: LLMs, skill-based agents, MCP, or other AI protocols are not required today, but relevant as our roadmap evolves. Technical Foundation (Not Strict Requirements) Strong candidates often have: - Solid software engineering fundamentals and development maturity, in any language (backend, frontend, or both) - Experience shipping real products to production - Knowledge of APIs, cloud platforms, and system design - A fast learning curve with new tools and technologies We care far more about what you've built than the stack you used. Our team currently works with Ruby on Rails and React, but we're open-minded about candidates from other stacks. We're specifically looking for prior experience working with legacy/monolithic systems and evolving internal frameworks; the language itself doesn't matter, what matters is having gone through that kind of architectural challenge. How We Work (A Coruña Office) At Factorial, we believe the best products are built when people come together, in person, to collaborate, challenge ideas, and move fast.
