Sustainability Engineer / Specialist Department: Strategy and Research Location: Birmingham Business Park (B37 7YG, UK) Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent Compensation: Competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications About the Role Our client, a global automotive OEM, is seeking a passionate and analytically driven Sustainability Engineer / Specialist to join their UK Strategy and Research team. This position plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s carbon reduction roadmap and ensuring compliance with evolving environmental regulations across the UK, Europe, and global markets. The successful candidate will monitor and interpret carbon frameworks, evaluate fleet and organisational carbon performance, and support senior leadership in developing effective sustainability strategies. Key Responsibilities • Conduct in-depth analysis of global carbon regulations and emission targets, with a particular focus on the UK and European automotive sectors., • Prepare regular insight reports and policy briefings for UK, European, and HQ leadership teams., • Track, model, and report fleet CO₂ performance across UK and EU operations, ensuring alignment with relevant compliance targets., • Support the development and execution of vehicle, battery, and organisational life cycle / carbon footprint assessments., • Design and refine internal processes and control frameworks to enhance data quality, transparency, and compliance efficiency., • Collaborate with engineering, product planning, and compliance teams to integrate sustainability considerations into product and business strategies., • Build and maintain close relationships with government bodies, policy institutions, and non-governmental organisations to stay ahead of evolving sustainability trends and regulatory changes. Requirements • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or above) in Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related discipline., • Minimum 3 years’ R&D or sustainability experience within automotive, energy, or advanced manufacturing industries., • Strong understanding of carbon emission regulations, fleet CO₂ compliance frameworks, and life cycle assessment methodologies., • Proven analytical and data modelling capabilities with attention to detail., • Demonstrated interest in emerging automotive technologies such as EV systems, batteries, and low-carbon innovation., • Previous experience engaging with regulatory authorities or policy institutions is highly desirable., • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to distil complex regulatory data into actionable insights.
