In this role, you will apply expertise across engine design, engineering, manufacturing, supplier engagement, simulation, and analysis to support the design, validation, reliability, and optimization of high-performance engine components and systems. The ICE Gear Drive & Damper Technical Specialist will serve as a subject matter expert for gear drive, damper, and roller bearing systems within GMPPU. This role is responsible for directing the design and analysis of critical engine subsystems that influence performance, durability, packaging, stiffness, stress, mass, and cost targets. The position also supports external partner engineering work, testing strategy development, technical issue resolution, and mentorship of junior team members. Key Responsibilities • Direct the design and execution of the engine gear drive system, including camshafts, pump systems, ERS interfaces, and auxiliary drives. Lead the design and analysis of complete gear drive systems to achieve performance targets within stress, stiffness, mass, durability, and cost constraints. Direct the design and analysis of dampers used in these systems or elsewhere in the engine. Direct the design and analysis of required roller bearings. Serve as a subject matter expert for gear drives, dampers, and roller bearings across GMPPU. Guide and review gear drive and damper engineering work completed by outside partners. Establish incoming quality checks for components and systems prior to testing or engine build. The role will be based in the Materials and Test (M&T) team within the wider Engineering and Technology department and report to the Functional Team Leader. The role as a Senior Materials Engineer will support the business and engineering team, with non-metallic, polymer materials science and processing knowledge and guidance. Concentrating on thin film coating technologies and transparency materials. The role will initially lead a transparency coatings validation project before moving onto site production support and material obsolescence projects. The role will require a knowledge of the interactions between processing parameters and material properties of Acrylics, Polycarbonates and Polymers, being able to guide new technology test plans and current production deviations. You will support the work of the business to establish safe working practices and necessary level of documentation. You will be involved with projects from the planning / assembly / instrumentation / commissioning phase though to successfully performing and reporting the test. You will also be responsible for providing specialist support to existing programmes within your field of expertise, helping to resolve manufacturing issues and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
