Job Description Teacher Tutors is hiring part-time Chemistry tutors to join our team on a flexible basis. We're seeking educators with strong chemistry backgrounds to support students from high school through the college level. This role is ideal for tutors who are confident across general, honors, and AP Chemistry, as well as introductory and organic chemistry at the college level, and who enjoy working one-on-one with students. Our students range from those building foundational skills to those tackling honors, AP, and college coursework. Sessions take place in students' homes, at the library, at our Livingston, NJ office, or online. Most of our clients prefer in-person tutoring, so we'd love tutors who are open to offering it. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius; you tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that. Responsibilities • Deliver one-on-one chemistry tutoring sessions tailored to each student's course, instructor's expectations, and learning goals., • Plan lessons and prepare materials (practice sets, review guides, worked problem sets, reaction and mechanism practice, lab concept reviews, exam-style questions, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach)., • Build students' fluency with core chemistry skills and concepts: the mole concept, stoichiometry, balancing equations, dimensional analysis, atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, and organic reactions and mechanisms and their ability to move between different representations of the same idea (molecular, symbolic, and mathematical)., • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working., • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early., • Communicate clearly and warmly with parents., • Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar. Requirements • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Master's or PhD candidates are welcome., • Demonstrated mastery of chemistry at the level(s) you'll be tutoring (high school general and honors chemistry, AP Chemistry, and/or college general and organic chemistry) with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework., • Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience (formal or informal) with students at the relevant grade levels., • Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards and exam frameworks (e.g., NGSS, the AP Chemistry course and exam framework, and common college general and organic chemistry sequences) and the areas where students most often struggle, such as stoichiometry, limiting reagents, equilibrium, and organic mechanisms., • Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment., • Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks., • Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals., • Comfort with educational technology., • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions. Preferred • A track record of strong outcomes with chemistry students at the subjects and levels you will be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, AP score gains)., • Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or specialized coursework, such as AP Chemistry, organic chemistry, or college-level general chemistry., • Familiarity with the major textbooks and curricula commonly used in these courses, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher or professor is using., • Real-world or professional experience (academic, industry, or research) that helps you make abstract concepts concrete (for example, connecting reaction chemistry or lab technique to work you've done)., • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve). Benefits Compensation & employment status • Pay range: $40 - $50/hour, based on degree and experience, • W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions., • 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding. Coverage area We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range.
