Job DescriptionABOUT THE JOBDESCRIPTION The employee performs a full range of dental hygienist assignments in a full-functioning capacity. Work is performed under the supervision of a licensed dentist, and considerable independent judgment is required to provide appropriate dental services within a healthcare setting. REQUIREMENTS * Performs oral prophylaxis on patients, including scaling, root planning, and polishing teeth to remove stains, plaque, and calculus using hand scalers, ultrasonic cleaning instruments, and motor- or air-driven dental polishers. * Examines the mouth to identify dental problems such as periodontal disease or tooth decay; charts findings and reports to the supervising dentist. * Educates patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, denture care, maintenance of oral health, and proper use of non-prescription medications. * Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records in the electronic dental record system. * Creates and maintains dental treatment charts and documentation. * Exposes and processes dental radiographs (bitewings, periapical films, panoramic X-rays), reviews findings, and communicates observations to the dentist. * Practices and maintains infection control procedures, including cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments and equipment. * Ensures dental instruments and equipment are maintained in proper working order and follows security procedures for medications, instruments, and needles. * Applies topical fluorides, anesthetics, desensitizing agents, and places sealants as appropriate. * Enters procedure codes and completes documentation in a timely manner. * Conducts oral health screenings and charts existing dental conditions. * Maintains patient and employee confidentiality in compliance with healthcare regulations. Administrative / Managerial * Collaborates with social services and other departments to support community outreach and dental education initiatives. * Participates in continuous quality improvement (CQI) projects. * Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs. * Identifies age-specific physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics. * Modifies treatment approaches based on patient age and response to care. * Uses age-appropriate communication techniques. B. Organizational / Professional Conduct * Maintains punctuality and satisfactory attendance. * Adheres to professional dress standards. * Demonstrates reliability, initiative, and time management skills. * Shows flexibility in completing assigned duties. * Participates in performance improvement activities. * Maintains confidentiality and adheres to organizational compliance policies. * Contributes to a cooperative, team-oriented work environment. C. Educational / Professional Development * Supports the development of other staff members. * Meets regulatory, licensure, and annual health assessment requirements. * Identifies personal learning needs and utilizes available resources for professional growth. D. Communication / Relationship Management * Maintains a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude with patients, families, staff, and community members. * Demonstrates tact and patience in all interactions. * Manages patient scheduling and telephone communications in a professional manner. EDUCATION REQUIRED * Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene. EXPERIENCE AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED * Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Dental Hygienist preferred. * Strong interpersonal, leadership, clinical, and organizational skills. * Interest in working within a community-based healthcare setting preferred. * Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. * Experience with electronic dental records preferred. LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED * Active State Dental Hygienist License.
