Job Description Markowitz & Barkoff, P.C. is a Long Island civil litigation firm with an active practice in subrogation and insurance defense. We are seeking a motivated Associate Attorney to manage a litigation caseload from intake through resolution. This is a hands-on role with real ownership of files, meaningful courtroom exposure, and a clear path for professional growth within a collaborative and supportive team. What You'll Do • Review new file assignments, evaluate liability and exposure, and develop case strategy, • Draft and revise pleadings, including verified complaints, answers, bills of particulars, affirmations, and memoranda of law, • Propound and respond to discovery, including demands, notices to produce, and deposition notices, • Conduct and defend depositions and examinations under oath, and prepare summary reports, • Prepare for and appear at court conferences, hearings, and status conferences, including e-filing through NYSCEF, • Draft and argue motions, including dispositive and post-trial motions, • Prepare clients, witnesses, and experts for depositions, mediations, and trial, • Prepare detailed status reports and correspondence for clients and insurance carriers, • Handle third-party practice and impleader where appropriate, • Investigate and pursue subrogation litigation, including coordinating with cause-and-origin experts, arranging evidence preservation and inspections, and pursuing recovery, • Conduct settlement negotiations and mediations and try cases as needed What You'll Bring • Juris Doctor and admission in good standing to the New York State Bar, • 0 to 5 years of litigation experience, • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, legal research platforms (LexisNexis preferred), case management software, and standard office technology, • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prepare clear reports, pleadings, and correspondence, • The ability to manage a heavy caseload and work both independently and as part of a cohesive team alongside attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff under the direction of Lead Counsel Preferred Experience and Skills • Familiarity with New York civil procedure and motion practice, • Subrogation, insurance defense, or personal injury experience, • Experience drafting pleadings and conducting depositions, • Comfort coordinating with experts and managing evidence, • Self-motivated, organized, and able to balance competing priorities Compensation and Benefits $85,000 to $125,000 per year, commensurate with experience and with room above this range for an exceptional candidate with the right background.
