Job Description At our organization, recognized as the largest private employer in New York State, we are dedicated to enhancing the health of the communities we serve through our extensive network of 23 hospitals and over 850 outpatient facilities. We are currently in search of a surgical leader to spearhead a specialized breast surgery team focused on disease-centric programs at our two primary hospitals located on Long Island. This individual will play a pivotal role in the establishment of our latest facility, the Center for Women's Cancer at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center. In the capacity of program leader, you will be responsible for realizing the vision for breast surgery services within our organization. The Chief will be instrumental in efforts related to physician recruitment and strategic planning for growth and development. You will collaborate closely with leaders from Surgery, Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and various medical and surgical specialties involved in cancer patient care. Additionally, you will partner with colleagues to create a framework for establishing clinical standards and ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices. As a leader in research, you will play a vital role in the growth of clinical trials at our organization. By fostering connections with researchers at the Feinstein Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, you will enhance patient access to clinical trials within the communities we serve. In your role as an educator, you will work alongside medical school leadership to design and implement educational programs, training the next generation of physicians at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The Surgery Service Line and Cancer InstituteOur Mission • To enhance and prolong the lives of all patients, empowering those diagnosed with or at risk of cancer, while contributing to society through research., • To collaborate with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in surgical and oncologic research aimed at understanding the causes, prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer and related conditions, maximizing research potential and fostering synergistic collaborations., • To educate and inform providers, researchers, patients, caregivers, and the broader community about treatment, screening, and prevention., • To train and develop future clinicians and scientists through innovative educational approaches., • To enhance multidisciplinary patient care to improve outcomes., • To serve as the organizational hub for breast surgery.Candidate Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience: Education and Experience • M.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited medical school., • Completion of a surgical residency and fellowship in a surgical specialty., • Board certification in general surgery or a surgical specialty., • Experience in a leadership role within a department or division, preferably at a major medical center or health system., • Experience in teaching residents and medical students., • A nationally recognized clinical, basic, or translational research program with a strong publication record in high-impact journals., • Exceptional communication and management abilities, with a talent for collaboration with medical staff, hospital management, and support personnel., • Active involvement in relevant national professional societies.Capabilities, • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to quickly establish credibility and rapport with clinical and administrative leaders, as well as physicians and staff across the organization., • Proven ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, fostering an environment of collaboration and trust., • Capacity to influence and drive outcomes among individuals without formal authority or reporting relationships., • Outstanding presentation skills and a high level of poise when engaging with senior leaders, both internally and externally., • Business acumen to navigate the operating environment, including competition and trends that may impact organizational success, along with the ability to assess the impact of decisions., • Ability to ensure that breast surgery program objectives are achieved on schedule and within budget, contributing to the development of a world-class health system that provides cutting-edge care and innovation., • A proven track record of fostering relationships with physicians to enhance integration and expand market share., • Expertise in the latest evidence-based clinical guidelines and technological advancements., • A genuine enthusiasm for working in a dynamic and evolving environment., • A commitment to training the next generation of physicians.Personal Characteristics, • Strategic and analytical thinker., • Integrity and accountability., • Visionary and innovative., • Decisive and results-driven., • Credible and influential presence.Responsibilities and First-Year Goals The newly appointed Chief of Breast Surgery will be expected to accomplish the following objectives within the first year: • Gain the trust and confidence of regional stakeholders, hospital leaders, administrators at each outpatient location, and affiliated physicians and staff at NSUH and LIJMC., • Identify and assemble a team for breast surgery services, including leaders for key surgical subspecialties., • Ensure high-quality patient care through the development and standardization of care processes and protocols, educational seminars, metrics, outcome measures, and process improvement initiatives., • Participate in the management of the department in a fiscally responsible manner, overseeing the annual operating and departmental budgets to ensure targets are met or exceeded, while ensuring the productivity of physician faculty and support staff., • Actively engage in physician recruitment and the development of growth opportunities., • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations with the Feinstein Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to expand and enhance research programs, with a focus on increasing access to clinical trials in the first year., • Participate in research projects (basic, clinical, applied) and provide guidance to fellows and house staff.
