Job Description This phlebotomist role is based in an outpatient patient service center in Arverne, Queens, and focuses on high-volume specimen collection, including a significant pediatric population. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and processing, and provide clear, courteous explanations to patients and their families. The position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, reliability, and excellent communication, with an emphasis on working comfortably and confidently with children. Responsibilities • Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight and butterfly needles in a fast-paced outpatient setting., • Collect and store specimens, including blood and other samples such as urine or fecal specimens, according to established procedures and protocols., • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients and, when applicable, to parents or guardians., • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles, especially for pediatric patients who require butterfly needle draws., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and processing., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing., • Package specimens securely for transport, following all procedures to maintain specimen integrity., • Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes in accordance with protocol., • Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality from collection through delivery., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to maintain a safe and compliant work area., • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough, organized documentation., • Instruct parents and guardians on the process and expectations for pediatric blood draws, ensuring they feel informed and comfortable., • Provide a patient-friendly experience, particularly for pediatric patients, by using a calm, supportive, and child-friendly approach. Essential Skills • Minimum 1 year of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • 2+ years of recent phlebotomy experience, including routine blood draws., • Proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture., • Experience working with pediatric patients, with a preference for 2 years of pediatric experience and comfort performing pediatric draws., • Ability to work comfortably with children under the age of 10, including using butterfly needles for pediatric collections., • Strong reliability and punctuality, with a consistent record of timely attendance., • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and parents., • Ability to instruct parents on the pediatric blood draw process and help them prepare their children., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks., • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-volume outpatient environment seeing up to 40–50 patients per day., • Skill in specimen collection, including proper labeling, handling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to protocol., • Attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Bilingual Spanish language skills are a plus but not required., • Experience or willingness to train in heel stick techniques, with a preference for 1–5 years of related experience., • Comfort working in an outpatient patient service center environment with a diverse patient population., • Ability to remain calm, patient, and reassuring when working with children and their families., • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting. Work Environment This position is based at a patient service center in Arverne, Queens, near Far Rockaway, in a two-person site that sees approximately 40–50 patients daily. The site serves a large number of children under the age of 10, many of whom require butterfly needle draws, making pediatric experience and comfort essential. The standard schedule includes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Thursday extending to 7:00 p.m. Weekend work is optional, with Saturday shifts typically running from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at other locations such as Elmhurst. The environment is fast-paced and outpatient-focused, with continuous patient interaction and frequent specimen handling, centrifuging, and packaging. You will work closely with one other team member on-site, collaborate to manage patient flow efficiently, and follow established procedures to maintain a clean, safe, and professional clinical setting. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Arverne, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
