Job Description Job Title: On-Call Inpatient Phlebotomist Job Description This on-call, per diem Phlebotomist role focuses on high-volume inpatient blood collection and specimen processing across all age groups in a hospital setting. You perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws, including pediatric and difficult draws, while maintaining strict safety and compliance standards. Responsibilities • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric and geriatric patients., • Complete pediatric blood collections safely and with sensitivity to the needs of children and their families., • Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other challenging situations., • Collect specimens in inpatient units such as pediatrics, intensive care, and other high-acuity areas., • Process specimens accurately and efficiently according to established laboratory protocols., • Verify patient identification and ensure proper labeling, handling, and documentation of all specimens., • Follow all hospital and laboratory safety policies, including infection control and standard precautions., • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of compliance requirements and consistently apply them in daily work., • Effectively communicate the importance of safety and regulatory compliance to colleagues and other staff., • Provide orientation and training support to patient service staff as needed, sharing best practices and procedures., • Respond to same-day on-call requests and report to work within the required time frame when contacted., • Work flexibly across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on operational needs., • Collaborate with supervisors, schedulers, and clinical staff to coordinate coverage and prioritize patient needs., • Maintain a professional, compassionate approach with patients, families, and healthcare team members at all times., • High school diploma or equivalent., • Current CPT 1 License., • At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting, including inpatient work in high-volume areas such as pediatrics, ICU, or similar units., • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages., • Experience performing pediatric blood draws and managing difficult or complex blood collections., • Strong knowledge of specimen processing procedures in an inpatient environment., • Comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety, infection control, and regulatory compliance., • Ability to clearly communicate the importance of safety and compliance to other employees., • Capacity to assist with orientation and training of patient service staff., • Willingness and ability to work strictly on an on-call, per diem basis., • Flexibility to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts as needed, including weekends., • Availability to accept same-day call-ins and report to work within a few hours when contacted., • Previous experience in high-volume inpatient hospital laboratories is highly beneficial., • Ability to adapt quickly to different hospital units and medical office building environments., • Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-centered approach to care., • Reliability and responsiveness in an on-call work structure., • Interest in building a long-term career within a large healthcare system., • Comfort working weekends and rotating coverage so that on-call responsibilities can be shared across the team. This is an on-call, per diem hospital-based phlebotomy role in a fast-paced inpatient laboratory environment. You primarily support inpatient units, including pediatrics, ICU, and other high-acuity areas, and may also work in medical office buildings and multiple hospital campuses in the surrounding region. Hours vary and can include 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends and holidays. Due to union and scheduling agreements, most available shifts arise from same-day call-outs, so you must be highly flexible and prepared to be called in on short notice, often needing to report within a few hours. You will complete a full training period on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, at a single location for the first few weeks before transitioning to on-call status. After training, supervisors and schedulers contact you to offer available shifts, and you may have opportunities to pick up additional hours at various hospital and medical office locations. The dress code requires professional scrubs, and you will work in a clinical environment that follows strict safety, infection control, and compliance standards with appropriate protective measures in place. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Riverside, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
