Job DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARYUnder medical supervision, provides medical and pelvic examinations for the purpose of assessing general health and eligibility for contraception; to ascertain pregnancy; and to ascertain the need for and provide therapeutic assistance for a determined range of infections and disorders. Provides educational and training services to staff and clients. This is a full time APC position supporting in person care and Telehealth services as needed, working out of one of the Nassau County sites. Working on Saturdays is required. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAdministrative (10%):•Participates in department and interdisciplinary committees which affect policies related to the role of the Advance Practice Clinician and delivery of health care to the customer.•Participates in agency quality risk management program. Direct Clinical Care: (80%)•Responsible for assessing, planning and administering health care which is individualized to the patient and consistent with the policies and protocols of PPFA and PPGNY.•Secures a complete health history and performs physical examinations with special emphasis on the reproductive health care, and other types of more specialized reproductive care including abortion care, and transgender hormone therapy.•Provides medications and contraceptive devices as needed.•Monitors medical aspects of all medical services offered at the health center, acting as a resource to center staff and patients regarding medical concerns.•Performs, orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests.•Provides education and appropriate management for women and men in need of reproductive related services, including fertility control, infertility, and sexually transmitted infections.•Assesses and manages gynecological conditions and provides treatment consistent with PPGNY protocols, policies, and procedures.•Ensures appropriate medical follow-up on all patient testing and/or treatment, including direct patient contacts and laboratory test review.•Create & maintain medical documentation in an EHR system in compliance with EHR policies and procedures.•Provides postpartum care in selected settings within an interdisciplinary team framework with appropriate pre-service and in-service education.•Seeks consultations as necessary from Medical Director or designee.•Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team and makes referrals to medical and community resources as indicated. Training: (10%)•At the discretion and direction of the Clinical Director, AVP of clinical implementation and or Medical Director, assists in training and orientation for newly hired APC’s and new skill development.•At the discretion and direction of the health center management, assists in training and orientation for newly hired clinical support staff.•Attends agency sponsored staff meetings, medical in-services and trainings. Physician Assistant To describe the general nature and level of work performed by physician assistants and senior physician assistants in the Emergency Department. Physician assistants are credentialed to perform direct clinical functions in all areas of the Emergency Department, including the Adult ED, Fast Track, Pediatric Emergency Department, and ED Observation Unit. Under the general supervision of the Attending Physician, the Physician Assistant in delivering primary care in the Emergency Department will perform the following duties: -Perform focused or comprehensive histories and physical examinations on ED patients, and formulate a diagnostic and treatment plan. -The documentation of the patient encounter will be completed on the medical record and will include information pertinent to the history of present illness and past medical history (including allergies and current medications). -Implementing treatment protocols and undertaking clinical decision making, under the supervision of an Emergency Medicine attending, for patients in the ED Observation Unit during its hours of operation. -Write orders for diagnostic tests, medications, consultations, immunizations and clinic referrals. -Review, interpret and document the results of the diagnostic tests ordered. -Confer with the supervising Attending Physician and nursing staff to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care and to keep them apprised of clinical developments, patient concerns, etc. -Write prescriptions in accordance with hospital guidelines. -Counsel patients when appropriate on health education issues and disease prevention. -The PA must present all cases to the supervising Attending Physician. -All referrals for consultation will be discussed with and approved by the supervising Attending Physician. -The PA must review all EKGs, laboratory and radiologic results with the supervising Attending Physician prior to discharging the patient from the ED. -Perform other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow-up for patients, obtaining informed consent from patients, recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment, and escorting patients when necessary to other areas of the hospital or interhospital transfers, inform patients of necessary post-discharge instructions as required. -Complete and document participation in continuing medical education required of physician assistants in order to meet requirements for certification, including assigned lectures and conferences. -Participate in the administrative and academic aspects of the ED in staff meetings, QA activities, conferences, morning reports and other duties as required professionally or at the request of the supervising Attending Physician, the Director of Service, and/or Chief Physician Assistant. -The PA may perform the following procedures under general supervision: • Venipuncture and initiating IV fluids, • Ordering of routine x-rays and laboratory studies, • Ordering of medications in accordance with hospital guidelines, • Catheterization of the urinary bladder, • Nasogastric tube insertion, • Reduction of dislocations, • Splinting of orthopedic injuries, • Arterial puncture for the purpose of blood gas determination, • Minor surgical procedures (e.g., suturing, incision and drainage, wound checks, etc.), • Endotracheal intubation, • Participate in the resuscitation of cardiopulmonary and other complex medical emergencies., • Participate in the management of complex surgical emergencies., • Order controlled drugs and psychotropic medications in accordance with established hospital guidelines. -Hazardous conditions may exist in the ED, such as patients who exhibit unstable, violent or aggressive behavior. The Physician Assistant may be exposed to bio hazardous substances, such as blood-borne pathogens, through the nature of work performed. -Completion of NYS- approved program for the training of physician assistants or specialist assistants, usually via Bachelor of Science program or degree in closely related field. -Registration required with NYS as Physician Assistant. -Certification with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent organization) preferred for Physician Assistant; mandatory for Senior Physician Assistants. -Certification in ACLS and PALS required. -High level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of the supervising Attending Physician. -Interacts with various internal hospital medical and administrative and professional staff in the course of routine clinical duties. Registered Nurse provides medical services in response to health problems, promotes health and safety; provides case management services; and collaborates with clinical and ancillary staff.
