Job Description Job Title: Foreman – Track Labor and Railcar Operations Job Description This role oversees and participates in railroad repair and construction activities, with a strong focus on loading and unloading rail tanker cars. You work hands-on with hoses, valves, and fittings, complete required documentation while materials are being pumped, and perform inspections and minor repairs on railcars. The position combines field labor, coordination of daily tasks, and ensuring safe, efficient operations in a physically demanding, outdoor environment. Responsibilities • Work on rail tanker cars to safely load and unload materials in accordance with established procedures., • Connect and disconnect hoses, valves, and fittings to rail tanker cars to support loading and unloading operations., • Monitor the pumping process for each railcar and complete all required paperwork accurately while contents are being transferred., • Inspect the manway gasket on the top of each railcar after unloading and determine whether it should be left in place, repaired, or replaced., • Use hand tools to repair or replace manway gaskets and perform minor mechanical tasks as needed., • Complete work on approximately one railcar per week, ensuring all steps from setup to final inspection are carried out safely and efficiently., • Perform general railroad repair and construction tasks during times when railcars are not being loaded or unloaded., • Support track labor activities such as assisting with maintenance, repair, and construction of railroad infrastructure as directed., • Adapt to varying work schedules based on the arrival and departure of railcars, ensuring readiness when cars arrive., • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines, including those related to hazardous materials handling when applicable., • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate daily tasks and maintain smooth operations., • Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and functional condition. Essential Skills • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods, including standing, climbing, lifting, and working outdoors., • Hands-on experience in construction, general labor, or similar physically intensive roles., • Capability to safely connect and disconnect hoses, valves, and fittings on rail tanker cars., • Comfort working at heights, including climbing to the top of railcars to inspect and service manway gaskets., • Basic proficiency with hand tools for repair and maintenance tasks., • Flexibility to work variable hours based on railcar schedules, including early mornings and work up to sundown., • Strong attention to detail to complete paperwork accurately while materials are being pumped., • Commitment to following safety procedures and working safely around rail equipment and materials. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Previous railroad work experience is preferred but not required., • Experience in construction or landscaping is highly beneficial due to the physical and outdoor nature of the role., • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred; training may be provided for the right candidate., • Experience in foreman or lead roles is advantageous, particularly in construction, general labor, or rail-related environments., • Willingness to learn rail-specific procedures and standards for loading, unloading, and repairs. Work Environment This position is entirely field-based and requires working outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the day. Typical work hours run from approximately 7:00 a.m. to sundown, with additional hours as needed depending on railcar schedules. The timing of loading and unloading activities depends on when railcars arrive, so the schedule can be somewhat sporadic, and you should be prepared to adjust as needed. You work around rail tanker cars and railroad tracks, using hoses, valves, fittings, and hand tools to perform loading, unloading, inspection, and repair tasks. The role is physically demanding, involving climbing onto railcars, standing for long periods, and handling equipment and materials in an industrial, rail-focused environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Perth Amboy, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.75 - $19.50/hr.
