Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a bilingual (Spanish & English) full-time Supervising Attorney with expertise in housing law. The Supervising Attorney will oversee our Housing and Benefits practice to provide cutting-edge eviction defense and housing quality enforcement in aggressively gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The Housing and Benefits legal team collaborates closely with our organizing team to focus on anti-harassment and prevention of displacement around our neighborhood offices in Bushwick. The Supervising Attorney will provide policy and campaign support on the areas of housing and public benefits. The Supervising Attorney will also have a small docket of housing cases representing both individuals and groups of tenants in enforcing their rights and fighting tenant harassment. The Supervising Attorney will be based in our Brooklyn office. MRNY currently has a hybrid work schedule with 3 days per week in person (including court time) and 2 days remote. Job DescriptionStaff Attorney – Consumer Bankruptcy and Education Debt PracticeDEPARTMENT: City Bar Justice Center REPORTS TO: Project Director FLSA STATUS: Exempt The City Bar Justice Center seeks an attorney committed to equal access to justice to join our team as a full-time Staff Attorney principally for our consumer bankruptcy and education debt practice as our organization synergizes the operations of its Consumer Bankruptcy Project and Homeowner Stability Project. The Justice Center provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting over 27,000 New Yorkers each year who lack resources to hire private counsel. With a staff of about 50, the Justice Center relies on expansive pro bono partnerships with law firms and corporate legal departments, and also works closely with the courts, the City Bar, and other stakeholders to support and advance the Justice Center’s multiple civil legal services projects. The City Bar Justice Center’s consumer bankruptcy and education debt practice advises individuals burdened with consumer, medical, and student loan debt on rights and remedies available to them under Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy and consumer laws; offers financial literacy education resources to the larger community; and trains and mentors pro bono attorneys to assist clients and support legal clinics, trainings, and presentations. A partnership with the Community Service Society’s Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program is an additional, critical piece of our work assisting federal and private student loan borrowers. The staff attorney whom we are hiring, together with a new project coordinator (paralegal), will work closely with the Justice Center’s Homeowner Stability Project, with the combined team charged with enhancing our capacity to meet the consumer debt, consumer finance, and other economic stability needs of our client communities. Responsibilities: The senior paralegal will primarily be responsible for assisting attorneys in the legal department with respect to individual homebuyer transaction closings in connection with the Affordable Homeownership Opportunity Program (AHOP) and related programs of the New York State Housing Finance Agency (HFA) which includes: (1) assisting in the review of loan documents, if any, prepared by a senior purchase money mortgage lender for individual eligible homebuyer closings of AHOP projects including, but not limited to, the senior promissory note/mortgage; (2) assisting in the review of all relevant documents provided by individual eligible homebuyers, including, but not limited to, the title report/policy; (3) assisting in the review of any additional documentation to address any legal issues that may arise in connection with individual eligible homebuyer closings in the AHOP program. The senior paralegal will also assist with other real estate and loan transactions financed by HFA, as well as broad HCR administrative matters. The position requires: (a) legal research and writing assignments; (b) attending mortgage closings and assisting in-house attorneys will all matters relating to such closings, both in advance of and in connection with the actual closing; (c) preparing mortgage closing transcripts; and (g) any other tasks deemed necessary by the Counsel or Deputy Counsel. The senior paralegal will also perform legal research for attorneys and assist attorneys in providing routine legal services related to the HFA’s loan management and mortgage enforcement efforts for housing projects.
