Job Description Closing Date: Wednesday, January 28th, 2026, 9:00 PM [PST] OR When 300 Applications Are Received Position: Heavy Equipment Mechanic Department: Public Works - Yard - Maintenance Hourly Range: $34.74 - $44.34 (Union- 6000 Series) Classification: Full-Time Non-Exempt – Overtime Eligible Benefits eligible & 401(a) payment equal to 5% of base salary Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs journey level repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including heavy equipment, passenger vehicles and light equipment and machinery. Supervisory Responsibilities: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Make repairs on all components of equipment including computer system, engine, powertrain, air conditioning, electrical system, hydraulic system, brakes, and other equipment as required., • Disassemble components and determine extent of repairs needed and parts for replacement., • Rebuild generators, carburetors and distributors., • Rebuild wheel cylinders and master cylinders., • Overhaul engines and equipment., • Align wheels and rebuild steering assembly., • Repair and maintain a variety of equipment including: motor graders, wheel loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, street sweepers, skip loaders, back hoes, pickup trucks, automobiles, park maintenance and street maintenance equipment, light equipment, and other equipment as required., • Perform field repairs., • Rotate, replace and repair tires., • Order parts; maintain inventories., • Maintain daily records of equipment repair and service, parts, oil, lubricants and other pertinent data., • Perform smog and emission checks in accordance with state requirements., • Perform preventive maintenance and safety checks, and DOT inspections and repairs on trucks., • Operate all heavy and light equipment as required., • Assist Lead Mechanic as necessary., • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service., • Perform related duties as assigned. The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive. An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor. This position is considered non-exempt. Qualifications: • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required., • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of automotive and/or heavy equipment. Three (3) of the five (5) years' experience must have been at the journey level., • Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment., • Knowledge of care and operation of internal combustion engines., • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of small (2-cycle) engines., • Ability to utilize standard tools and equipment in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and automotive equipment., • Ability to diagnose engine and equipment problems., • Ability to work effectively with others and follow City safety procedures., • Ability to keep adequate records and provide written reports on work performed., • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; inspect work in progress and upon completion; perform outside field repairs as well as in shop repairs; respond courteously and tactfully to public inquiries and complaints., • Possess intermediate skill in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; proficiency in common office equipment (i.e. printer, scanner, copier fax machine, etc.), • Must be able to obtain a California Class A driver’s license within 12-month probationary period.
