Maven Capital Partners is looking for a Portfolio Manager to join our North East team. This role will report directly to the Partner responsible for the region. The key purpose of this role is to drive value creation within the private company investment portfolio by providing strategic support and guidance to investee company management teams with the overall aim of increasing shareholder value and realising successful exits. This will include; monitoring growth and cash requirements against plan, challenging strategy, supporting the delivery of value creation plans and utilising professional network contacts where appropriate, with the overall aim of increasing shareholder value. Whilst Maven is a generalist investor, the portfolio will include a number of manufacturing and software businesses. RESPONSIBILITIES • Proactive management of an investee company portfolio ranging from high potential growth businesses in the scaleup phase, through to established SMEs requiring a more strategic approach., • Hands-on support to portfolio companies requiring direct input and guidance to address specific business opportunities and challenges, including new products and new markets, cost base optimisation, M&A support for bolt-on acquisitions, new business initiatives and implementation of successful exit strategies., • Attendance at investee company board meetings and meetings with senior management teams to provide strategic support and constructive challenge., • Provide robust and insightful monthly/quarterly updates and reviews of individual and consolidated investee company performance within the portfolio., • Prepare papers for the Maven investment committee for follow-on funding or amendments to the investment terms., • Attendance of local business networking events to raise Maven’s profile with potential investees and investment intermediaries., • The post holder will carry out any other duties that are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or member of the leadership team. This may include consultative support and guidance to other team members regarding their portfolio responsibilities., • The post holder will proactively comply with and promote all organisation policies, including those relating to Equality and Diversity and Health & Safety. WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED • No less than 10 years’ relevant work experience., • Previous experience in a senior financial and commercial management role in one or more businesses backed by an institutional investor, or of managing a portfolio of SME investments ideally in PE/VC or high growth environment., • Demonstrable track record of operating as a business partner to achieve profitable business growth (e.g. turnaround, restructure, M&A or organic expansion)., • Experience of working with SME environments and entrepreneurial management teams aiming for growth., • Knowledge and understanding of corporate finance transactions (equity and debt funding)., • A proactive approach and ability to multi-task and work to deadlines with minimum of supervision., • Strong communication and influencing skills and experience of managing multiple stakeholders., • Resilient and resourceful when facing challenging situations with investee businesses, • Exhibit ability to solve problems with commercial acumen., • Strong financial modelling and written communication skills. Reporting to the Business Commercial Director, this is an important leadership role and a critical part of the BGEN leadership team, managing commercial performance across this growing area. The Commercial Director will be the Infrastructure SBU commercial conscience and ensure that targeted margin is achieved, cash is collected promptly and risks are appropriately managed. They will work closely with the business leadership team and the contract teams to identify and realise opportunities to reduce costs and maximise revenue. They will produce financial and commercial reports, work closely with client representatives and be involved in tender assessments. What will you be doing? • Ensure targeted margin is achieved, • Ensure cash is collected promptly, • Identify and realise opportunities to reduce costs and maximise revenue, • Produce financial and commercial reports, • Collate and scrutinise monthly cost value reconciliations, • Produce and routinely update cash forecasts, • Work closely and establish strong relationships with SBU Directors, Operational leads and their teams, • Lead the annual budget process for the SBU and any re-forecasting exercises, • Participate in tender assessments including producing formal detailed reviews of proposed contracts, • Build and maintain effective relationships with key client contract and commercial leads, • Review and agree contractual terms, • Support the contracts in producing and maintaining margin improvement plans, • Support the contracts in producing and maintaining WIP reduction plans, • Cascade the latest contractual guidance, • Recommend and assist in the implementation of best practice to improve efficiency, increase margins or minimise risk, • Work with contract teams to ensure correct administration of contracts, • Assist in minimising disputes and in resolving disputes promptly, • Assist in ensuring robust sub-contract processes and procedures are in place, • Monitor, analyse & investigate commercial performance against tender allowances / budgets / targets, • Ensure compliance with legal and corporate standards, • Support the introduction of new systems and procedures to improve performance/efficiency, • Recruit, train & develop commercial staff, • Quantity surveying or commercial management degree or equivalent, • RICS Chartership or equivalent, • Construction Industry experience, • Extensive demonstrated experience in commercial management, • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, • Experience of construction commercial management systems and procedures, • Detailed understanding of cost value reconciliations, • Understanding of actual cost collation and comparison to target cost, • Thorough understanding of sub-contract procurement and administration, • Comprehensive understanding of forms of contacts and methods of measurement, • Utility or civil engineering contracting experience, • Experience of high volume, low value capital and maintenance contracts, • Excellent I.T. skills, • Understanding of performance based commercial models, • Excellent negotiator, • Company car Or Allowance and Fuel Card with a range of Hybrid and Electric Cars, • Private Health Care - Family Cover, • Matched Pension Scheme, • Access to our Employee Assistance Programme, • Salary Finance - an online portal offering financial support via articles, videos and blogs. You’ll be responsible for, Strategic leadership and growth Lead the business unit’s strategic direction to achieve significant revenue growth, margin improvement and market leadership in complex MEICA delivery, to deliver c£90M growing organically to c£180M turnover per year within 3-to-4-year cycle achieving blended margin at +10% EBITDA. Operational excellence and delivery Ensure consistent, efficient and innovative end-to-end MEICA operations across all frameworks, projects and manufacturing activities.
