Head of Social Science Location: School in Brent, Inner London Role: Head of Social Science Team Size: Approximately 5 colleagues Subjects Covered: GCSE Business (incl. BTEC), A Level Economics, BTEC Health & Social Care, AAQ qualifications Contact: Full time and Permanent Overview We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Head of Social Science to lead a dynamic and diverse department within an Inner London secondary school. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, drive high standards of teaching and learning, and ensure strong outcomes across all Social Science disciplines. This is a key middle leadership role, responsible for managing a team of around five staff and overseeing curriculum delivery across Business, Economics, and Health & Social Care qualifications. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Management • Provide clear vision and direction for the Social Science department, • Lead, support, and develop a team of approximately five teaching staff, • Undertake line management responsibilities, including performance management and professional development, • Foster a collaborative and high-performing departmental culture Curriculum & Teaching • Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the curriculum across:, • GCSE and BTEC Business, • A Level Economics, • BTEC Health & Social Care, • AAQ provision, • Ensure schemes of work are rigorous, inclusive, and aligned to examination board requirements, • Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning across the department Student Outcomes • Drive high attainment and progress across all Social Science subjects, • Analyse performance data to identify trends and implement improvement strategies, • Ensure effective intervention strategies for underperforming students Quality Assurance • Lead departmental quality assurance processes, including lesson observations, work scrutiny, and assessment moderation, • Ensure consistent and effective assessment practices across all key stages Wider School Contribution • Contribute to whole-school improvement priorities and initiatives, • Work collaboratively with senior leadership and other departments to raise achievement, • Promote enrichment opportunities within Social Sciences Person Specification Essential • Qualified teacher status (QTS/QTLS), • Strong subject knowledge in at least one Social Science discipline (Business, Economics, or Health & Social Care), • Proven experience of delivering excellent outcomes at GCSE and/or A Level/BTEC, • Experience of middle leadership or aspirational readiness for leadership, • Strong understanding of curriculum design and assessment at KS4/KS5, • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff effectively Desirable • Experience across multiple Social Science subjects, • Experience with vocational qualifications (BTEC/AAQ), • Track record of improving departmental performance in an inner-city school context, • Experience working in diverse, urban school settings If you are interested and still looking for a position please apply The successful candidates will be subject to a variety of checks including: eligibility to work in the UK, an enhanced DBS disclosure and full references including one from your most recent employer.
