Job Title: Caretaker Location: Bracknell, BerkshireStart Date: ASAPContract: [Full-time / Part-time – amend as required] Job Purpose We are seeking a reliable, proactive and flexible Caretaker to support the day-to-day running, safety and presentation of a busy secondary school site in Bracknell. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school buildings and grounds are secure, well maintained and ready for use throughout the school day. Key Responsibilities The Caretaker will be responsible for: • Ensuring the buildings and site are secure, including daily security checks and locking/unlocking at designated times, • Opening the site promptly each day and ensuring it is fully prepared for the school day, • Securing the site at the end of the day by locking doors, windows and gates, turning off gas and electrical appliances, and setting alarms correctly, • Acting as a Registered Key Holder and attending emergency call-outs as part of an on-call rota, • Proactively identifying, reporting and resolving building defects and damaged equipment, maintaining a high standard of repair, • Keeping accurate records relating to maintenance and site security, • Working in line with health and safety regulations, addressing hazards and reporting serious concerns immediately, • Undertaking general porterage duties, including moving furniture and equipment, • Supervising contractors on site under the direction of the Site Manager, • Operating site systems such as heating, lighting, cooling and security (including CCTV and alarms), • Receiving deliveries to the school, • Collecting and preparing waste for collection, • Carrying out periodic cleaning of allocated areas within the school buildings and grounds, • Maintaining familiarity with the asbestos register and ensuring contractors refer to it before commencing work, • Assisting with the maintenance of specialist equipment (e.g. sports or theatrical equipment) following appropriate training, • Participating in training and development activities as part of the school’s performance management framework, • Keeping all storage areas clean, tidy and free from hazards, • Covering duties for absent premises staff when required, • Undertaking emergency and additional cleaning as needed (e.g. toilets, medical room, parents’ evenings), • Ensuring litter bins are emptied daily and that grounds, pathways and surfaces are clean and well maintained The ideal candidate will: • Be dependable, practical and organised, • Have experience of caretaking, site management or building maintenance (desirable), • Demonstrate a strong awareness of health and safety requirements, • Be able to work independently and as part of a team This role involves working in an educational environment. Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check.
