Job DescriptionDescriptionOverview The NYPL Energy Team is committed to implementing energy management best practices across the NYPL’s portfolio of buildings to help the City meet its ambitious emissions reductions and energy goals. NYPL is working to reduce building emissions by 49% by 2025 and 86% by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels), culminating in full decarbonization by 2050. The Energy Team works to track overall energy usage and identify energy-saving opportunities in buildings, implement energy-efficient operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, and oversee the delivery of energy-efficiency retrofit projects. The Energy Engineer provides direction and oversight on operation and maintenance activities across the New York Public Library’s portfolio of real estate to ensure all locations are operating efficiently. The Energy Engineer will work with outside vendors and project managers on designing, specifying, programming and integrating new and existing building management systems (BMS). The position requires a technical understanding of HVAC systems, diligent recordkeeping and other administrative duties related to maintaining an efficient and professional Facility Operations team. We are looking for someone we can count on to: Own: • Coordination and management of multiple building automation installation projects across NYPL’s portfolio., • Technical assistance and troubleshooting of BMS and solar systemsTeach:, • Staff to identify opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency and sustainability and how to execute such measures.Learn:, • How the Facilities Department interacts with other divisions and departments, • How to improve critical work functions and efficiencies department-wide., • Diversification of knowledge of building systems and equipment.Improve:, • Understand how the library is organized and physically laid out, • Understand the specific goals and role of the Energy Team and Facilities Operations team in relation to other departments, • Know their departmental contacts, • Begin to perform inspections and assessments of Library branches3 months, this person will:, • Serve as a primary point of contact on energy team for BMS systems of all branches, • Participate in interdepartmental planning meetings, • Develop logistical plans, • Oversee implementation of schedules, • Resolve problems and create action plans within limited resources6 months and beyond, this person will:, • Train others on energy conservation and sustainability, • Perform inspections and assessments independently, • Develop cost estimates for resource redeploymentResponsibilities, • Support the design and development of energy efficiency and/or clean energy projects: Collaborate with NYPL’s Energy Team to identify potential energy efficiency and clean energy project opportunities at City facilities. Assess the current state and provide risk analysis of City facilities to develop recommendations for building optimization and energy efficiency. Develop project scope of work through surveys and site visits and prepare energy project funding proposals and supporting documents (i.e., materials that calculate estimated energy savings, cost savings, emissions reductions, and other benefits expected from energy projects)., • Provide technical assessments, design review, and M&V. Perform engineering calculations and energy modeling to verify the reasonableness and accuracy of estimated energy usage reductions, energy cost savings, and avoided emissions for proposed energy efficiency projects. Assess construction design information such as detail and assembly drawings, design calculations, system layouts and sketches, or specifications. Review, provide comments, and make recommendations on design packages submitted by consultants for proposed energy efficiency projects. Evaluate designs or specifications submitted by contractors to ensure accuracy and quality. Perform measurement and verification (M&V) activities (e.g., developing M&V plans, quantifying energy usage impacts post-implementation, performance and savings verification, etc.)., • Support energy-efficient operations and maintenance, including building optimization, as well as commissioning and retro-commissioning. Support energy-efficient building operations and maintenance (O&M), preventative maintenance, energy audits, retro-commissioning and controls installation efforts to city-owned and/or supervised buildings to bring them into a state of good repair. Specifically:, • Building operations: Uses existing equipment and system monitoring databases to trend equipment data and identify issues, anomalies, and re-tuning opportunities. Makes recommendations about maintenance to facility maintenance teams. Helps create equipment-specific maintenance plans for newly installed and retrofitted equipment, especially if that equipment needs a different maintenance approach because of its technology, vendor-specific requirements, and/or impacts on operations., • Preventative maintenance: Support building maintenance by helping develop and implementing a preventative maintenance plan; offer technical expertise and resources (e.g., tools and training) to improve operations and maintenance of building systems., • Commissioning: Provide commissioning oversight for new projects, including reviewing project specifications, design, construction, and commissioning documents. Ensure that installed equipment and systems can be properly commissioned and maintained by checking against original design intent, design basis, and owner project requirements. Provide field verification through witnessing and testing to ensure project quality and adherence to design. Oversee all commissioning documentation (including verification sheets, test procedures, final commissioning report and systems manual) transfer to the agency. Track and maintain accurate records about commissioning issues., • Energy audits and retro-commissioning: Review and analyze energy audits completed by third-party consultants and contractors to identify and verify energy conservation opportunities. Conduct testing and short-term diagnostic monitoring to evaluate and implement energy and cost-saving opportunities associated with system tune-ups and no-cost to low-cost measures., • Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, mechanical, or electrical) requiredRequired Experience, • 2+ years of experience in energy management, commissioning, building automation controls systems or mechanical or electrical engineering, • Extensive experience in commissioning mechanical and electrical equipmentRequired Skills, • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical design drawings, • Familiarity with technical project management operations, including project planning, scope development, design and construction management, and project close-out, • Familiarity with NYC mechanical and energy codes, as well as ASHRAE guidelines for high-performance buildings, • Candidates with a NYS Professional Engineer licenses, as well as Building Operator Certification-Level 1 certification, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), and/or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) credential and/or experience creating and conducting Measurement and Verification Plans per the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) are preferred, • Good technical writing and verbal communication skills, • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and business relationships, • Be Helpful to patrons and colleagues, • Be Resourceful in solving problems, • Be Curious in all aspects of your work, • Be Welcoming and InclusiveWork Environment, • Public library setting, • Outdoors, • Office setting, • Active construction sitesPhysical Duties, • Lifting/moving items up to 30 lbs may be required, • Traveling throughout NYCPre-Placement Physical Required?, • NoUnion/Non Union, • Non-UnionFLSA Status, • ExemptSchedule, • 35 hours per week, • Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, • Evenings and weekends as necessaryThis job description represents the types and levels of responsibilities that will be required of the position and shall not be construed as a declaration of all of the specific duties and responsibilities for the role.
