Job DescriptionJob Title: Laboratory Group Leader and InstructorJob Description We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Group Leader and Instructor to provide professional-level technical support in a large university laboratory setting. The role involves leading and instructing laboratory technicians, assistants, and students while applying scientific research methods and techniques. Responsibilities • Function as the group leader and instructor for laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, and students in a large university laboratory., • Provide professional-level laboratory technical support, applying scientific research and clinical methods., • Perform and oversee multistage purifications, nucleic acid extractions, assays, and tests., • Prepare tissues, chemicals, and specimens for testing, including the breeding of small animals if necessary., • Log and enter computer records of sample identity and processing data., • Inventory, store, and track extracted samples in a -80 degrees centigrade freezer storage system., • Retrieve and prepare stored samples for distribution to investigators, maintaining a computer log of samples., • Perform quality control and assurance checks as samples are processed, investigating sample discrepancy problems., • Perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, and prepare reagents and solutions., • Assist with maintaining supplies and materials, and cross-train in cell culture activities., • Order supplies, interface with service personnel for instrumentation, and sign off on service work performed., • Act as a contributing author on progress reports and manuscripts., • Respond to equipment operation failures, such as freezer alarms, by notifying supervisors and executing relocation and repair plans., • Operate robotic systems for high-throughput analysis and perform basic molecular biology assays, including DNA/RNA isolation and PCR.Essential Skills, • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, preferably Biology., • Academic lab experience, including courses and labs related to biology., • Proficiency in manual or automated pipetting, single or multichannel., • At least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty for high complexity testing., • Experience in DNA and/or biochemical extraction, blood cell separation, and tissue culture., • Working knowledge of MS Office, especially Excel, and database systems., • Ability to work autonomously and under pressure., • Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds., • Operate and maintain sophisticated equipment., • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats., • Effective communication skills and participation in occupational health and safety programs.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a biological science., • Transcript required if the academic major is not specified., • 32 hours of science with 16 for chemistry and 16 for biology; 3 hours of mathematics., • Degrees from outside of the United States require a credential equivalency evaluation from NACES or AICE.
