Job Description ABOUT US New York Edge is the largest provider of after-school and summer camp programs in New York City public schools. Each year, programs in academics, including STEM, the arts, sports and wellness, and college access, help 40,000 students develop leadership skills and succeed in school. SUMMARY Food Explorer Specialists provide age-appropriate nutrition education to youth in New York Edge after-school programs. This part-time position is geared towards engaging children in an exciting but realistic way to promote healthy behavior changes they can model for their peers and families. The Food Explorer Specialist position works with the Program Director to ensure the location sites' after-school wellness needs and goals are met. WORK SCHEDULE 9-15 hours per week. Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured, age-appropriate, and have clear learning goals based on the provided Food Explorer and physical activity guide. Communicate with the Program Director and Center for Food Explorer and Wellness regarding the calendar of programs, leagues, tournaments, and special events. Motivate and provide students to participate in organization-wide Food Explorer activities. Establish and enforce safety rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible. JOB DESCRIPTION: • Function as a coach, mentor, teacher and advocate for youth in the program, providing supervision and implementing program activities as directed, • Ensure that the program schedule, rules and regulations are maintained and that the safety and security of the youth and the facility are maintained at all times, • Complete all required documentation and reports as per program policies and procedures and licensing requirements, • Work with youth in a variety of situations- e.g. in the residents as well as in the community and/or manage many different types of household activities including cooking, cleaning, homework assistance etc., • The job requires supervision and accountability for the care, safety and well-being of minors JOB REQUIREMENTS: Valid NJ driver's license Required plus one of the following • A high school diploma or GED and 1 to 3 years of experience working with children in a group setting, such as a coach, mentor, teacher, or advocate for children; OR, • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field that is unrelated to social work or psychology and six months experience working with children in a group setting; OR, • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology or a related field Preferred qualifications: Experience in a residential setting working with adolescents and young adults with psychiatric diagnosis.
