They hold responsibility for the implementation of Uncommon Schools’ performing arts curriculum and the success of its students. This performance-based program, which teaches during the school day, ensures that students perform multiple times annually. Our Performing Arts Mission Statement: Uncommon NSA-CP Performing Arts team is an inclusive collective of anti-racist artist activists, dedicated to closing the opportunity gap by training confident communicators through theatre, music, and dance. By building a comprehensive communication toolkit, scholars will be able to express their authentic voices with confidence, seize opportunity, choose their own path and become agents of change. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES The Performing Arts teacher’s responsibilities fall under 3 categories: teaching, producing theatrical and community events and supporting/building the school culture. Teaching: * Teach Uncommon School’s Performing Arts musical theatre curriculum which involves music, acting and movement (at Uncommon Schools much of this curriculum is already planned and written, so teacher is responsible to implement it, or select from show options depending on show) * Implement curricula and activities to meet grade level performing arts standards * Collaborate with our Performing Arts Team in curriculum development process. Producing: * Direct and produce school productions annually ( can include: Community Circle, Latinx & Hispanic Show, Black History Show, Spring Musical and Moving Up Ceremony for every grade level annually) * Adapt scripts annually. * Create or order costumes, sets, props when needed, assign costumes/adapt annually. * Supervise and craft production elements such as lights, sound, set. School Culture and Daily School Activities: * Produce and oversee the school’s Community Circle. This involves organizing all traffic patterns, chants, cheers, drummers, mascots, flags, working with principal to rehearse and prepare all students. * Oversee breakfast for students daily, greeting students, visitors and assisting with the start of the day. * Assisting around the school when not teaching if needed * Share responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activities * Commit to continual professional growth, participating actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetings if requested * Participate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training in August Writing: * Crafting new performance content pieces with PA team and Dean to add to shows, sharing across program. * Supporting with creation of curriculum materials to be shared across program. Qualifications * Musical theater skills (singing, acting and moving) and ability to model all 3 content areas. * Some production skills preferred such as producing, playwriting, directing, or technical support. * Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player. * Bachelor’s degree is required with GPA 3.0 or higher. * Professional experience on stage is preferred. * Strong desire to teach in an Uncommon Schools setting * Willingness to teach using Uncommon teaching methods is required. * Valid NJ Certification is helpful but not required. * Belief in and alignment with Uncommon Schools’ core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable. This position will support the Senior Manager, Production Lab with inventory management services, as well as other general support outlined, but not limited to, the duties listed below. The Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU School of Law ("The Center") engages in research, public education, advocacy, and litigation to advance its mission of shaping how people understand, diagnose, and address issues of race and inequality. The Center's priorities include: shaping the public discourse and consciousness around race and inequality; addressing the influence of race and inequality in the criminal legal system; confronting the racial justice implications of technology and algorithmic decision-making tools in the criminal legal system and other systems that govern people's lives; challenging the forces that drive racial segregation and economic disadvantage in communities of color; and infusing legal education with a racial justice lens. Throughout the history of this country, racial bias and discrimination has played an arbitrary and pernicious role in the administration of the criminal legal system and has contributed to the problem of wrongful conviction. Two-thirds of the 254 people freed or exonerated by the IP are people of color and 58% are Black. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, Black people comprise 47% of all known exonerations since 1989, even though they make up just 13% of the U.S. population. Furthermore, Black people are seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than white people; a Black person convicted of sexual assault is 3.5 times more likely to be innocent than a white person convicted of such a crime; and innocent Black people are 12 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of drug possession than innocent white people. Since 2016, Correctional Health Services (CHS) has been the direct provider of health care in the New York City jails. Deeply committed to human dignity and patient rights, CHS is part of the NYC Health + Hospitals system and is a key partner in the City’s efforts to reform the criminal-legal system. Our in-jail clinical services include medical, nursing, and mental health care; pharmacy services; substance-use treatment; social work; dental and vision care; discharge planning; and reentry support. Given the high visibility of this initiative, we are seeking the highest caliber health care professionals in key clinical services to staff our Outposted Therapeutic Housing Units (OTxHU). To be located in three NYC Health + Hospital acute care facilities, the OTxHU is a pioneering approach to safely increasing access to high quality clinical care for patients in custody who have complicated health conditions. OTxHUs will bridge the gap in the continuum between care provided in the jails and inpatient hospitalization, with admission to and discharge from the OTxHU in accordance with a patient’s clinical needs. Job Description Position Overview: The Dean is responsible for ensuring that the highest quality curricula are developed across the school and for creating a positive, structured, and disciplined school culture. They are responsible for ensuring that the students’ learning experiences are exciting, and rigorous, and helping to prepare them for college. The Dean coordinates curriculum and instructional content with the Teaching & Learning team, coaches teachers, assesses teacher and student performance, coordinates professional development needs for the school, and provides operational support to keep the academic program running. It is also important that a Dean cultivates productive relationships with all members of the school community, including faculty, students, and families. The Dean reports directly to the Principal, who provides guidance and sets school policy. Duties and Responsibilities: General responsibilities include (but are not limited to): * Curriculum and Assessment * Develop and execute high-quality, standards-based school curriculum and instructional content consistent with the philosophy, values, and mission of the school and KIPP NYC. * Clearly articulate student performance goals for each grade level and work with teachers to set measurable student goals in individual classes. * Continuously monitor student achievement by analyzing independent work, standardized test results, and other data points in order to target interventions. * Attend and facilitate productive content team meetings. * School culture * Work closely with the leadership team to develop a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and creative school culture. * Lead the implementation of values integration and character development within the classroom community. * Be highly present and visible during school hours, relentlessly ensuring the school has a strong culture. * Support execution and coordination of cross-school instructional and cultural initiatives. * Student Discipline * Model positive interactions with students, as well as a variety of ways to handle misbehavior and disruptions (principles of Love and Logic, Lemov techniques, etc). * Recognize and celebrate exemplary student achievement and behavior, communicating with families of students on a regular basis. * Reinforce the effective use of a school-wide behavior plan and serve as a point person for discipline and culture issues. * Assist teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans (in conjunction with the Social Worker/Guidance Counselor). * Teacher coaching and professional development * Plan, implement, and provide ongoing professional development and feedback to all staff, focusing on building positive student relationships, student culture, and classroom community. * Support teachers in developing their classroom management and instructional practice (unit and lesson planning, lesson execution, and collection and use of assessment data). * Conduct classroom observations and follow-up with targeted feedback and support to help teachers become even more effective. * Communicate teacher performance to the principal, highlighting teachers in need of principal coaching due to insufficient performance. Complete quarterly, mid-year, and end-of-year teacher performance evaluations. * Organize summer training and professional development days in coordination with other Deans and the Principal. * Recognize and celebrate staff professional growth and success. * Operational support * Teach classes when necessary, for coverage purposes or professional development of teachers. * Collaborate with the Leadership Team regarding daily schedule, class schedule, and student placements in conjunction with the Director of Operations. * Ensure completion of report cards and progress reports. * Participate in the teacher recruitment and hiring process, in collaboration with the Principal. Qualifications • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment and a healthy measure of the character traits we value: zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor. At least five years of full time classroom teaching experience * At least one year of adult management/teacher coaching * Experience in education leadership is strongly preferred. Ability to effectively manage instructional and non-instructional staff. * Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of students within our KIPP NYC communities. * Demonstrated success in developing academic programs and academic culture. Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness. * Demonstrated success in planning staff professional development and leading teams of teachers * Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess student progress toward standards and present data effectively. * Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative * Extreme flexibility to accommodate multiple priorities and a strong work ethic to accommodate high levels of responsibilities * A passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture * Bachelor’s degree required. * Model effective and high-quality teaching. * Ability to give and implement feedback. * Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision making. Additional Information Compensation and Benefits: KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $100,636 - $195,427. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and the scope of responsibility within the Dean role. KIPP NYC will evaluate a candidate’s years of experience at point of hire to determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our Dean salary scale.
