Job Description JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Program Director/designee, functions as part of a team assigned to support consumers living in independent apartments in the community. Assists assigned individuals in developing and maintaining viable living, working and social situations in the community by obtaining needed medical, social, psychosocial, educational, financial, vocational and other services. Participates in the provision of crisis intervention services to participants. Travels to/visits consumers' residences or apartments to provide counsel and assistance and to help the consumers, within their capabilities and interests, in maintaining the greatest degree of independent living. The majority of duties are often performed independently under general supervision. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: • Travels to/visits consumers' residences to provide supportive services on a schedule established by the program. Help the consumer to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing understanding of self and others. Counsels’ consumers individually or in small groups regarding plans for meeting service needs and aids the consumers to mobilize inner capabilities and environmental resources to attain, • Secures information, such as medical, psychological, and social factors contributing to the individual's situation, and evaluates these and the individual's capabilities. ABOUT CJA The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit service and research organization that operates in partnership with the New York City Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. CJA is the City's main pretrial services agency, combining operations, pilot projects, and research under one roof. CJA utilizes procedural justice practices to provide pretrial services to over 100,000 people arrested annually in New York City. Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency's internal and externally shared database systems, which are used to conduct descriptive and evaluation research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues and potential reforms to criminal justice policy in New York City. POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor, the Behavioral Health Specialist will provide hybrid office and community-based support for clients who met the eligibility criteria of high-risk and high needs and require a support team to meet with them where they are at regardless of their location in NYC. The Behavioral Health Specialist is an integral part of the Clinical Services Department with Queens Supervised Release, which strives to support clients in improving behavioral health, promotes recovery and rehabilitation, and provides the highest quality care and support in a responsive and effective manner to high-risk and high needs clients who can be served in the community by creating new opportunities for success. Counsel unemployed residents by providing guidance in obtaining employment in cooperation with the Employment Placement Specialist., • Verifies residents' pass plan through pass sponsorship according to contract, so that the resident is accountable for his/her whereabouts in the community., • Prepares terminal report within established time parameters upon resident release to summarize program performance and to satisfy contract requirements., • Participates in staff meetings by sharing observations and recommendations regarding the facility, residents, and staff relations to identify and solve problems and function as a unified team., • Maintains confidential information obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, residents, outside agencies, etc., so sensitive information is on a "need to know" basis., • Complies with GEO policies and work rules as described in the company Employee Handbook, and the Facility Policies and Procedures Manual, including directives of GEO managers and supervisors in a cooperative spirit to ensure conformance to company standards., • Adheres to GEO’s attendance policy; be available for all shifts; work overtime as required to ensure adequate coverage of the program and to ensure the safety and security of the residents., • Complies with facility safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others., • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation., • Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s Degree in social, human services, criminal justice or behavioral science programs from an accredited college or university., • One (1) year of experience in human services, corrections or community-based services., • Work experience may be substituted for academic studies exchanging one (1) year of work experience in a related field for one (1) year of academic education., • Total work experience needed in lieu of the combination of education and work experience is five (5) years., • Familiar with community corrections systems and current community corrections practices., • Familiar with community work force needs, public and private agencies and employment services., • Ability to write clear concise reports in English using correct grammar., • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate percentages., • Must be able to react quickly and appropriately in an emergency situation., • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred, but not mandatory.
