Job Description Assistant Chief Engineer Reports to: Chief Engineer / Director of Engineering Department: Engineering & Maintenance Classification: Exempt / Full-time POSITION SUMMARY The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for supporting the overall operation and maintenance of the hotel’s physical plant, including guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house, and grounds. This position assists the Chief Engineer in supervising the engineering team, managing preventive maintenance programs, coordinating repairs, and ensuring that all systems — including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and life safety — operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all local regulations. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced luxury environment. MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES • Support the Chief Engineer in the daily management of all engineering and maintenance operations throughout the property, restaurant, and grounds., • Supervise and guide maintenance engineers and technicians; assist in scheduling, training, and performance evaluations., • Oversee the completion of Preventive Maintenance programs on guest rooms, mechanical equipment, and public areas., • Conduct regular walkthroughs of the property, updating logs, identifying issues, and initiating timely corrective actions., • Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, air handling units, water pumps, and exhaust fans., • Maintain and troubleshoot building systems including electrical panels, lighting, plumbing, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, locks, and communication systems., • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, inspections, and fire safety compliance logs in accordance with FDNY and NYC requirements., • Support the Chief Engineer in coordinating with contractors and vendors for special projects, repairs, and capital improvements., • Assist in maintaining the hotel’s energy conservation and sustainability programs., • Ensure adherence to all safety, security, and operational standards, including OSHA and FDNY compliance., • Minimum 5+ years of maintenance engineering experience in an upscale or luxury hotel environment., • Strong knowledge of HVAC/R, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical systems., • Computer literacy and working knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS) such as Automated Logic., • Experience with HOTSOS or other maintenance management software preferred., • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects under pressure., • Proficiency in written and spoken English., • Certifications or training in any of the following areas preferred:, • FDNY Certificates of Fitness:, • F-58 (Fire Safety Director), • S-12 (Citywide Sprinkler), • S-13 (Citywide Standpipe), • P-98 (Fuel Piping), • P-99 (Low Pressure Boiler), • EPA / HVAC / OSHA certifications beneficial., • Paid vacation, sick, and personal days, • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans, • Commuter benefits, • Complimentary employee meals while on duty, • In-house uniform cleaning services, • Holiday staff events and appreciation programs, • Departmental and company-wide incentive opportunities
