Job DescriptionPosition Title: Youth Development Specialist Program: Voyages Preparatory High School - Elmhurst, Queens, NY Status: Full-Time (35 hours per week) Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Salary: $21.98 – $23.08 per hour Position Summary Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site nonprofit organization serving the diverse population of Queens through a broad network of programs for children and youth, adults and families, and older adults. The Youth Development Specialist (Advocate Counselor) will provide comprehensive support services to participants at the Voyages Preparatory High School in Elmhurst, Queens. As the primary point of contact for students, this role focuses on preparing young adults for internships, post-secondary education, and career readiness. Primary Responsibilities * Attendance Outreach: Conduct ongoing outreach, including home and worksite visits, to address attendance issues and promote consistent engagement. * Post-Secondary Planning: Provide one-on-one counseling to assist students in developing and implementing plans for college, vocational training, or employment. * Counseling Services: Conduct at least two individual counseling sessions per student—one focused on academic progress and one on career advisement. * College Application Support: Assist eligible students with completing CUNY and FAFSA applications. * Advisory Groups: Facilitate workshops on topics such as job readiness, career exploration, conflict resolution, leadership, youth employment, and psychoeducation. * Parent and Guardian Engagement: Maintain regular communication with families to support student success and address identified needs. * Case Management: Maintain accurate case files and document weekly progress notes in Salesforce. * School Collaboration: Work collaboratively with DOE staff and facilitate structured communication between students and teachers. * Academic Monitoring: Review student attendance and academic performance, providing targeted interventions when needed. * Referrals and Support Services: Make appropriate referrals to community resources and provide additional support as needed. * Team Collaboration: Attend agency staff meetings, DOE meetings, and regular supervision sessions. * Special Projects: Participate in school and program initiatives, and assist with special projects as assigned. Qualifications * Bachelor’s Degree required; preferably in Psychology, Education, Social Work, or a related field. * Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth, preferably within a NYC high school setting. * Ability to work the required schedule (afternoon/evening hours during the school year and daytime hours during the summer). * Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. * Computer proficiency required; experience with Salesforce preferred. Position Overview Queens Community House is seeking a qualified and mission-driven Advocate Counselor to provide comprehensive academic, career, and social-emotional support to students enrolled in the Learning to Work (LTW) program at Queens Satellite High School for Opportunity. LTW is an alternative pathway to high school graduation for youth ages 16 and older, funded by the NYC Department of Education and implemented in collaboration with DOE school staff. Students participate in structured academic supports and are placed in paid internships for up to 10 hours per week. The Advocate Counselor plays a critical role in student engagement, post-secondary planning, case management, and family collaboration to ensure positive outcomes for program participants. Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Engagement & Attendance • Welcome students daily and take school attendance to foster positive engagement, • Conduct ongoing attendance outreach, including home visits and worksite visits, • Facilitate communication and structured meetings between students and teachersCounseling & Case Management, • Develop and implement individualized post-secondary plans (college, training, or employment) within 60 days of enrollment, • Provide a minimum of two (2) individual counseling sessions per student per month:, • One focused on academic progress, • One focused on career exploration and advisement, • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files and document all student interventions weekly using Google Forms, • Connect students to internal and external resources and make referrals as neededGroup Facilitation & Workshops, • Facilitate advisory groups using established curricula and discussion-based learning in areas including:, • Job readiness and career exploration, • Conflict resolution and mediation, • Leadership development and civic/political education, • Community service and youth employment, • Gender identity groups and psychoeducationCollege & Career Readiness, • Support eligible students with the CUNY and FAFSA application process, • Refer students selecting LGCC, QCC, or BMCC as their first or second choice to the CASP Case Manager, • Introduce students to the internship program and refer appropriate participants to the Internship Coordinator, • Conduct regular check-ins with internship students to support work–school balanceFamily, Staff & Program Collaboration, • Maintain ongoing communication with parents and guardians to support student success and address family needs, • Work closely and collaboratively with DOE school staff, • Meet weekly with the Program Director and come prepared with agenda items, • Ensure required follow-up is completed with program graduates in July and February, • Attend mandatory agency-wide meetings, quarterly staff meetings, and parent-teacher conferences, • Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and responsiveness to school and program needsQualifications, • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or a related field, • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth, preferably in a NYC high school or alternative education setting, • Strong commitment to youth development, educational equity, and social justice, • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, multitasking, and communication skills, • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment and discretion, • Proficiency with computers and digital tools (Google Workspace preferred) and willingness to learn new systems Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience Benefits may include: • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, • Life insurance and flexible spending accounts, • 403(b) retirement plan, • Generous paid time off (vacation, sick days, and holidays)
