The successful candidate will hold a medical and/or research doctoral degree, will be expected to establish an externally funded laboratory, mentor trainees, and contribute to departmental teaching and collaborative translational initiatives at and outside CUIMC (strong interactions with the proteomics, transcriptomics imaging and iPSC/core facilities encouraged). Responsibilities Establish and lead an innovative research program investigating endolysosomal/endosomal dysfunction and neuron-glia interactions in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, FTD and related disorders. Secure extramural funding (NIH, foundation, industry partnerships) to support a sustainable research program; prepare and submit competitive grant applications. The Zeltser lab is looking for a motivated scientist to join their team as an Assistant Professor of Medical Sciences in Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center (non-tenure track). The lab studies how the sympathetic nervous system regulates metabolism and how this is impacted by obesity and aging. We utilize a variety of genetically engineered mouse models, virus-based neural tracing and chemogenetic approaches, single nuclear transcriptomics, and in vivo physiological and metabolic measurements. The ultimate goal is to identify neural circuits that regulate distinct aspects of brown fat and function and systemic metabolism. The ideal applicant will be an experienced researcher with expertise in both neuroanatomy and the neurobiology of autonomic regulation of peripheral targets and/or central regulation of metabolic parameters. The procedures for this project require expertise in multiple advanced techniques. The experienced researcher must be able to master state-of-the-art techniques to map and manipulate sympathetic circuits regulating discrete targets in the periphery, including stereotaxic injections, viral tracing, chemogenetics and fiber photometry. In parallel, this project also involves the analysis of physiological phenotypes in vivo, including thermogenesis, glucose uptake and lipolysis. Experience with surgical techniques in mice is essential. The applicant will be expected to lead projects independently and to train and mentor others. The applicant is also expected to make substantive contributions to the formulation and writing of manuscripts and grant applications. Interest in developing new technologies is a plus. We also have several active Clinical trials available to our patients. This position will support the department by providing clinical and administrative support to our Clinical Genetics team. Responsibilities • Assist with pre-visit preparation, including the collection of relevant medical records, lab reports, and patient intake forms., • Assist in processing, packaging and shipping specimens and preparation of samples for genetic testing in a timely manner., • Obtain and coordinate insurance pre-authorization for specialized laboratory testing., • Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record system., • Coordinate collection of consent forms and samples from patients for virtual appointments., • Perform appointment and testing data entry into clinical database., • Mail out result letters to patients., • Regularly check and order genetic testing supplies and kits to ensure they are fully stocked., • Make reminder phone calls for upcoming patient appointments, as needed., • Assist with scheduling research patient appointments, as needed., • Assist with projects that streamline patient record collection and storage, as needed., • Extremely organized with a high attention to detail, with specific attention paid to accurately recording data., • Familiar with medical terminology and laboratory testing., • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word., • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required., • Must be comfortable working independently and with teams.
