Job Description Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, and supporting efficient laboratory workflows. This position combines hands-on phlebotomy, patient interaction, and administrative tasks such as updating patient information, troubleshooting issues, and making recommendations to improve work processes in a fast-paced clinical environment. Responsibilities • Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and professionalism., • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols., • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and reassuring manner., • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols., • Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to confirm accuracy before processing., • Package specimens securely for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity., • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes., • Follow all procedures outlined by protocol for specimen handling, storage, and transport to ensure quality and compliance., • Fully understand and accurately follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection., • Update and maintain patient information and specimen records accurately in the appropriate systems., • Record maintenance data and perform routine decontamination of work areas and equipment as required., • Troubleshoot common phlebotomy and specimen processing issues and make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency., • Answer telephone calls, assist with inquiries, and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy information requests., • Attend required annual department trainings and stay current with policies, procedures, and best practices., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards., • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required by state regulations., • Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture, blood draws, and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles., • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test orders., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks., • High School Diploma or GED., • Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling., • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients., • Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment., • Ability to read and accurately follow physicians’ orders for laboratory tests., • Skill in troubleshooting routine phlebotomy and specimen processing issues and suggesting workflow improvements., • Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results when appropriate., • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, labels, and requisitions simultaneously., • Commitment to ongoing learning, including participation in annual departmental training. This role is based in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting and operates primarily on a Monday through Friday first-shift schedule, with additional Saturday hours. The position involves frequent patient interaction for blood and specimen collection, as well as regular use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units. You will work with computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, manage requisitions, and support laboratory documentation. The environment requires strict adherence to safety, OSHA, and DEP regulations, as well as consistent participation in annual department trainings to stay current with procedures and protocols. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Madison, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
