Job DescriptionSalary: $35 per hour Reports to: Project Manager Job Description: We are seeking an individual who can help work with participants of BLM Paterson, programming to navigate social service and medical systems. Many participants of our programs navigate complex identities that places barriers to receiving the services they need. The individual in this position will be able to use their lived experience, along with other training received in house as community advocate, to walk alongside clients to support them as they face these complex barriers. People who inject drugs face countless community and health barriers, including but not limited to stigma, social disparities, STI, HIV, Hepatitis C, and possible overdose. BLM Paterson program utilizes a harm reduction approach to decrease negative consequences of drug use, through education, outreach, and advocacy. On a yearly basis, we reach over 500 out of treatment individuals who inject drugs, providing access to the tools they need to stay healthy and to stay alive. This position would focus their work with people who actively use substances to engage them in staying healthy and alive. Responsibilities • Active engagement with people who use substances and individuals who are living with, or at risk for HIV using a collaborative, person-centered approach grounded in harm reduction, trauma- informed practice and healing based practices., • Distribute and recover harm reduction supplies, and provide education and support on safer drug use, safer sex, HIV, hepatitis C, and STIs., • Conduct street-level outreach activities to people who inject drugs in areas or neighborhoods identified as high-risk or high-need, • Work one-on-one with participants to set goals in achieving any positive change as they define it for themselves, • Assist in creating a supportive environment in which Recovery is an individually defined concept, and all paths towards it are encouraged. Share personal recovery journey as needed., • Facilitate individual and group sessions on an on-going and as needed basis., • Identify participants in need and provide appropriate referrals, including assisting participants with accessing support services such as substance use treatment, homeless shelters, syringe exchange, OD prevention and Naloxone, PrEP, treatment for HIV, HCV, and STIs, and other services as needed, • Identify service providers working with populations at risk for overdose., • Develop and maintain partnerships with local service providers to reach focus population., • Maintain a presence at community events reaching focus populations., • Work through existing opioid using networks to increase awareness and utilization harm reduction services., • Identify locations to provide on demand overdose prevention and response trainings., • Provide service delivery in line with BLM Paterson policy and procedure., • Correctly fill out all requisite paperwork, and accurately track program data., • Recommend program improvements, and innovative strategies to reach focus populations as needed., • Coordinate and implement all program activities as per scope of work and timeline., • Link newly diagnosed individuals to care services, including case management and doctor appointments, as well as helping with access to health insurance., • Assist with outreach and HIV testing efforts., • Attend specialized training specific to program design and implementation, and behavior change theory application., • Lived experience as an individual who uses drugs., • Recovery Coach Certification (assistance can be provided to obtain)., • Ability to work effectively with humans of diverse gender identities, races ,ethnicities ,ages, sexual orientations, and drug use patterns, in a multicultural environment. PR’s are responsible for the money they collect and ensuring that it is locked in the safe or locked drawer at their desk or in supervisor’s office at all times. Keys to drawers are never to be left in the open., • Communicates with the medical staff regarding patient’s visits., • Assists with printing out requisitions or other forms as needed., • As PR’s are in the public areas, they should present themselves always as professional and friendly, and act as a team player in all situations. They are responsible for keeping their personal areas and their surrounding public areas neat and clean and should routinely “straighten up” during the day., • Appearance of attire and possessions: PR’s should keep their “scrubs” that they wear in good condition, clean and neat. Only Zufall jackets are to be worn over scrubs. Wearing of personal sweaters or sweatshirts are not allowed. Only white T shirts are allowed under scrubs and clean sneakers are to be worn. No personal clothing or possessions are to be visible at their desk or on the back of the chair. This includes cell phones which should never be taken out, for any reason in an area where patients are allowed, regardless of whether or patients or visitors are present., • PR’s are hired as a PR I. They remain at this level during their initial training and after three months of employment are required to take an exam which covers all of the material that is required to perform their duties. It includes but is not limited to customer satisfaction, telephone encounters, refill processes, insurances, registration of patients, special population definitions, HIPAA, compliance and Zufall policies and procedures., • Maintains patients’ confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and other federal, state and local regulations as stated in the ZHC policies and procedures manual., • Answers inquiries of patients and public in person or via telephone regarding regulations and services; when necessary, refers inquiries to appropriate person or department., • Reads, writes, speaks, understands, and communicates in English and Spanish sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Through eye contact, body language, voice and general presence, the Floor Staff must always communicate accessibility to members, by circulating through the rooms, making eye contact, and introducing themselves to members and learning members’ names. (No cell phones, reading, sitting, eating, or socializing in the fitness centers.), • Conduct Fitness Center Orientations, consistent with the Health and Wellness Department training design. This involves teaching members how to implement a basic personal exercise program, using YMCA equipment and facilities. This also includes having full knowledge of Antitax and the ability to successfully enroll a member in the system including providing the required fitness testing and follow up with members after initial orientation., • Promote member interaction while providing a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, by assisting members with their health and fitness goals. Demonstrate for members the proper technique of how to use the wellness center equipment., • Address questions and needs of the members. If floor staff are unaware of the answer, they will report to the appropriate staff, and learn the answer., • Periodically tour all exercise rooms., • Enforce all posted rules., • Must be able to promote healthy living while remaining responsive to members’ needs and concerns, by providing an environment conducive to member satisfaction and retention., • Floor Staff will direct members with any special medical limitations or concerns to the Health and Wellness Director., • Safeguards any malfunctioning fitness equipment with an "out of order" sign and records updates in maintenance log and on checklist to be completed at end of shift., • Supervise member's behavior and exhibit patience and tact while ensuring adherence to member code of conduct and Fitness Center rules and procedures, (in particular the 30-minute time limit on cardio equipment when others are waiting)., • Maintains neat and orderly fitness facilities, (plates are racked, magazines stacked, old papers thrown out, floor is clear, equipment is wiped clean, etc.) This includes completion of a checklist by the end of the shift which must be left in the Health and Wellness Director’s mailbox., • Always is well groomed and presentable, wearing an appropriate YMCA staff shirt and I.D., • Responsible for securing another Fitness Center Floor staff substitute when unable to work scheduled shift, and effectively communicating the substitution to both the substitute and Health and Wellness Director., • Accepts other assignment as requested by the Health and Wellness Director., • Manages radio station/TV stations and volume level, (when in doubt or challenged by a member, turn the radio volume down)., • Practices risk management by anticipating potential safety hazards and taking appropriate action to reduce or eliminate the risk while reacting quickly and effectively to any emergency, (this may involve initiating a "Code Blue")., • Record incident/accident reports according to the YMCA policies and procedures., • Promotes any special fitness programs/incentives etc. that the department is running and has full knowledge of the programs including the ability to answer any related questions., • Promotes a fitness environment that is friendly, welcoming, and conducive to member retention., • Conduct personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association., • Anticipates and or quickly reacts to member conflicts and takes appropriate corrective action. (Example: manages the waiting list for the cardio machine, clarifying how much time is left for existing users to assist members who are waiting)., • Participate in appropriate staff meetings and training activities and maintain CPR/ First Aid Certification., • Follows hand scan procedures and is accurate in recording work hours., • Provide high quality customer service to all members and is able and willing to conduct YMCA tours to new or prospective members., • Assist with the emergency evacuation of the building and other special situation tasks, as needed., • The effectiveness of this position should be observable and measured by membership satisfaction surveys and evaluations, both formal and casual., • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants., • Attends required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants., • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures., • Ensures unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitors high-risk locations (locker rooms and restrooms, etc.).
