Responsible for providing respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities, under supervision of physician. Principal Accountabilities: 1. Evaluates prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and checks patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment, such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosages., 2. Renders aerosol medications and treatments to patients for inhalation, and positions patients to assist in breathing and prevent lung obstruction., 3. Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications that may be needed, which will be compatible with physician's orders., 4. Sets up and operates devices, such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators to support respiration and maintain patient's oxygen supply., 5. Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment, such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients., 6. Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes., 7. Performs chest physiotherapy on patient to remove mucus from their lungs and make it easier for them to breathe and assists patient in performing breathing exercises., 8. Assists in the performance of diagnostic testing by performing pulmonary function tests to be used by physician in diagnosis of case., 9. Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy., 10. Consults with physician in event of adverse reactions., 11. Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, and orders repairs when needed., 12. Provides patient education and support for patients suffering from chronic lung disease., 13. Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel., 14. May care for premature infants with underdeveloped pulmonary systems, the elderly who have increased susceptibility to pulmonary and cardiac disease, and trauma patients., 15. Other related duties as assigned Education: • Associate of Science degree from an accredited respiratory therapist program, required., • 1+ years of Respiratory Care experience, • Critical care experience, highly preferred., • Previous experience with PFT studies and cardiopulmonary testing, highly preferred., • Active license for Respiratory Therapy in New Jersey, required. Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), required within one (1) year of employment., • Basic Life Support certification required. Job Duties Performs respiratory therapy procedures as per scope of service and NJ Board of Respiratory Therapy, either independently according to protocols or under physician orders, such as but not limited to: Administration of oxygen, aerosol and medicated aerosol therapy. Initiation, monitoring and maintenance of mechanical ventilation. Blood-Gas drawing (with certification) and Acid-Base analyses. Suctioning of patient airway, trach and mouth care, bronchial hygiene. CPR. Delivers, sets-up, monitors and changes medical gases as required. Intubation (with certification). Tracheostomy care. Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Performs cardiopulmonary evaluations and assessments and diagnostic procedures including but not limited to breath sounds, weaning parameters, point of function testing, ABG (arterial blood gases), discharge planning and possible home care needs. Assessments will include evaluation of treatment and/or procedure outcomes as compared to physician goals and appropriate follow-up action. Positions patients as required (e.g., by physician's orders, patient's condition, or therapy being administered). Responsible for the assembly, sequential operation, and calibration of equipment and accessories to implement associated therapeutic regimens including, but not limited to, teaching inpatients and outpatients incentive spirometry as appropriate; instructs patients and family before discharge on pulmonary rehabilitation procedures (e.g., deep breathing, use of equipment at home, suctioning procedures). Attends and participates in Medical Rounds and teaching conferences. Documents patient outcomes and maintains other required documentation in patient chart and department records according to departmental policies and procedures. Maintains open lines of communication with other disciplines to facilitate resolution of problems and patient care issues in a timely manner. Acts as resource or consultant to physicians, nurses, patients and families and to other Respiratory Care practitioners and the public to provide appropriate, tactful support and education when requested and required; provides clinical supervision of care given by Technicians as well as supporting higher-credentialed personnel. Performs infection control procedures (i.e. changing resuscitator bags, aerosol set-ups and recycling same as required); processes equipment on an as-needed basis. Reports problems or unusual circumstances to appropriate member of health care team. BASIC COMPETENCIES Education Graduation from an AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy program required for new hires. Current NJ license as Respiratory Therapist required, CRT certified by the NRBC, BLS certification. Experience 1 year of critical care experience preferred. Skills Good oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal skills. Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position. JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Patient care areas, Respiratory Care Services office, off-site locations, decontamination area, tank yard; contact with staff, patients, family.
