Approximately fifty minutes (28 miles) from NYC by train, Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Job Description Portledge School is seeking an experienced and mission-aligned Varsity Assistant Track & Field Coach to support its Upper School Track & Field program. The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Head Coach to help develop a competitive, inclusive, and values-based team that reflects Portledge’s Mission and its Pillars of Kindness, Purpose, Honor, and Respect. This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to mentor student-athletes across multiple skill levels and event groups, and a commitment to representing Portledge with integrity within the PSAA and NYSAIS leagues. Responsibilities and Duties: * Support the Head Coach in developing and implementing training plans, event-specific instruction, and meet strategies that serve student-athletes of varied abilities across sprints, distance, jumps, and/or throws. * Help cultivate a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture aligned with Portledge’s Mission, Pillars, and NYSAIS accreditation standards. * Assist in planning and leading structured practices, event group training sessions, team meetings, and meet preparation. * Provide meaningful mentorship to student-athletes, encouraging growth, confidence, leadership, and personal responsibility both on and off the track. * Help identify and evaluate prospective mission-aligned student-athletes who may also be prospective students. * Maintain consistent communication with players, families, colleagues, and school leadership regarding expectations, schedules, performance, and progress. * Collaborate with the Athletics Department to ensure proper maintenance and organization of equipment, uniforms, and meet logistics. * Ensure compliance with all PSAA, NYSAIS, and NFHS rules and regulations. * Travel with the team to away meets and invitationals; attend all practices, competitions, and team events. * Assist in the use of meet and practice film or timing data (e.g., Hudl, meet timing software) for performance review, technique development, and strategy refinement. Qualifications and Skills: * Previous coaching experience, preferably at the JV, or Varsity level. * Strong understanding of track & field fundamentals and team-building strategies. * Ability to inspire and connect with student-athletes of varying skill levels. * Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. * High level of integrity and professionalism in representing the school and athletic program. * Bachelor’s degree preferred (in education, sports management, or a related field). * Availability for evening and weekend commitments, including travel for away games. * Commitment to upholding the values of an independent school community. * Belief in the value of all types of diversity, equity and an inclusive, positive, and student-centered environment Season: The season begins March 2, 2026 and ends in late May.
