Hardware Systems Engineer Company: ISS Aerospace Location: Chieveley, Newbury, UK Employment Type: Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week Annual Leave: 28 days holiday per annum THE ROLE This role is part of the chain of work to provide the end-to-end capability to manufacture, build, integrate, test, and deliver our UAS — whether as production-ready platforms or bespoke systems within larger R&D and trials programmes. We are looking for a UAV Hardware Systems Engineer at graduate/early-career level, with a strong interest in systems integration and hands-on work. This role suits someone who enjoys understanding how UAVs operate inside and out, and who can independently figure out how to integrate new hardware by researching, testing, and applying solutions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Assembly, wiring, and integration of avionics, sensors, payloads, and propulsion systems, • Configuration and setup of flight controllers (e.g., Cube, ArduCopter, PX4), • Building and maintaining wiring looms, harnesses, and electrical systems, • Using CAD tools to support mechanical and electrical integration tasks, • Testing and troubleshooting UAV hardware and subsystems, • Researching and integrating new hardware or payloads without constant reference to others, • Supporting flight trials and R&D activities with hands-on technical assistance, • Maintaining documentation of integration processes and wiring diagrams YOUR PROFILE • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience), • Strong understanding of UAV flight controllers, avionics, and operating systems (Cube, ArduCopter, PX4, etc.), • Familiarity with different types of UAV sensors, payloads, and communication systems, • Competence with CAD software for hardware layout and integration tasks, • Basic electrical and mechanical skills — wiring, soldering, nuts-and-bolts assembly, • An interest in UAV systems and motivation to learn by doing, • Hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving, • Ability to work independently and figure things out through research and testing, • Good understanding of how UAVs operate as complete systems, • Flexible and adaptable, willing to support across hardware, integration, and testing tasks, • Strong attention to detail, ensuring safe, reliable, and high-quality integration, • Enthusiastic about UAV technology and motivated to grow with the company The role involves occasional international travel to meet the needs of our diverse customer base and global projects. Candidates must hold a valid passport and be prepared to travel within the UK frequently to support trials, demonstrations, and customer engagements. Applicants must be able to provide proof of identity, eligibility to work in the UK, and employment or education history for up to three years.
