Mechanical Pre-Contracts Engineer / Mechanical Design & Estimating Engineer Egham - £70,000 - £110,000 + package This is not a standard estimator position, and it is not a standard design engineer position either. It sits between the two. The role needs someone who can look at a building, understand the existing mechanical services, work out the right solution, develop the design thinking behind it and then help price the work properly. It is technical, commercial and practical in equal measure. The business is a specialist mechanical services contractor delivering HVAC, CAT A, CAT B, fit-out and refurbishment projects across commercial, industrial and public sector environments. They provide design and build mechanical services across heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water, plumbing and sanitary systems, with in-house design capability and practical delivery experience behind it. The company is now looking for a senior mechanical pre-contracts engineer because one of the key people in the business is planning to step back towards the end of 2026. He will still be involved in the background, but the intention is to bring someone in who can take on more of the front-end engineering, surveying, design review, estimating and client-facing technical work over time. This is a proper opportunity to grow into a central role in the business. The company has traded steadily at around £7m-£10m turnover for the last 7-10 years, and typically reviews around 300 opportunities a year, with roughly 30-36 projects won and delivered annually. That gives the role a strong mix of volume, technical variety and genuine influence over what the business chooses to pursue. The work is mainly CAT A, CAT B, student accommodation and retail, with a lot of the value sitting in the early-stage thinking. You will be looking at enquiries, attending surveys, understanding existing buildings, developing mechanical solutions and helping produce a price that reflects the actual scope, risk and buildability of the project. The design offering is based around taking projects from first technical drawings through to final installation, either by developing designs in-house or working from existing drawings, notes and technical specifications. If that is the weaker part of your background, it can be developed. What cannot be missing is the mechanical engineering understanding. You need to know how systems work, how they are installed, what can go wrong on site, and how to spot whether a design or specification is practical before it becomes a problem for the delivery team. Mechanical Project Manager Site-based | From May 2026 £75,000 - £90,000 or £350 - £400/day CIS/Ltd If you are tired of being brought into jobs just to firefight programme issues, supply chain problems and coordination gaps created earlier in the process, this is the kind of role that gives you proper control from the front end. You know mechanical project managemen is not straightforward. It is not just about pushing labour and chasing paperwork. It is about planning works properly in a live, controlled setting, managing access, sequencing refurbishment and new-build elements, keeping standards high, and making sure delivery stays commercially and operationally on track. This role gives you the chance to do exactly that on a substantial custodial programme where the mechanical package matters. You will be joining a top 30 M&E contractor with more than 25 years in the market. The business is privately owned and delivers across design and build, full M&E services, HVAC, IT infrastructure, CCTV, security, access control and fire alarms. Their project portfolio spans commercial, education, residential, super-prime residential, leisure, healthcare and Ministry of Justice environments, with schemes ranging up to £20m. That breadth matters because it points to a contractor used to working in complex, highly regulated buildings where planning, coordination and quality cannot be left to chance. The work itself is strong. This programme involves the refurbishment of existing prison buildings alongside the delivery of new houseblocks, a healthcare facility, multipurpose workshops, teaching spaces, gym facilities and additional catering and kitchen areas. It is the sort of job that needs a Mechanical Project Manager who can look beyond the individual package and understand how delivery, access, sequencing, compliance and handover all have to come together in a controlled environment. This is a site-based role across HMP Feltham and HMP Coldingley from May 2026. You will be the person responsible for making sure the mechanical works are properly planned, properly resourced and properly delivered. You will build and manage the programme, drive procurement and labour forecasting, control subcontractor performance, oversee health and safety, manage the financial and variation position, and keep the project moving towards a snag-free handover. You will also be the key point of contact on the mechanical side, so being comfortable in front of the client, communicating clearly and maintaining confidence throughout the job is a major part of the role. This is not a position for someone who wants to sit behind reports and react to problems from a distance. A strong track record of managing subcontractors, driving standards and maintaining programme and commercial control. Client-facing confidence and the ability to take ownership of the mechanical scope from early planning through to handover. Custodial or Ministry of Justice experience would be highly attractive. You will be responsible for the commercial, operational and delivery performance of assigned contracts, making sure projects are delivered safely, cost-effectively and in line with contractual requirements. What you’ll be doing • You will manage a portfolio of electrical projects across data centre and critical infrastructure environments., • You will take responsibility for projects typically ranging from £1m to £10m, with a focus on upgrades to switchgear, UPS systems, generator systems, LV infrastructure and associated electrical services., • You will manage the full contract lifecycle, including pre-contract input, mobilisation, delivery, change control, defects, handover and final close-out., • You will work closely with clients, project teams, engineers, supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers, commercial teams and internal leadership., • You will manage programme, procurement, labour, supply chain, plant, materials, logistics and site delivery to make sure each contract is delivered properly., • You will oversee technical submissions, RAMS, RFIs, permits, QA documentation, commissioning requirements, O&M information and project reporting., • You will monitor project financial performance, including cost, sales, gross profit, forecasting, applications, variations, change control and risk., • You will identify additional works opportunities, support revenue growth and make sure additional works are delivered and financially closed out properly., • You will manage subcontractor and supply chain performance, making sure works are delivered safely, on programme and to the required standard., • You will maintain strong client relationships and act as a senior point of contact across assigned projects., • You will make sure statutory obligations, HSQE requirements, company procedures and contract execution plans are properly followed., • You will keep systems, records, data and project documentation up to date. What you’ll need • You will need experience as an Electrical Contract Manager, Electrical Project Manager, Electrical Projects Manager, Electrical Package Manager or Senior Electrical Project Engineer., • You will need strong electrical building services or critical infrastructure experience, ideally gained with a principal contractor, M&E contractor, electrical contractor, data centre specialist or critical environment contractor., • Critical infrastructure knowledge is important. Experience with data centres, switchgear upgrades, UPS systems, generators, LV distribution, shutdowns, live environments, testing, commissioning and handover would be highly relevant., • You should be comfortable managing projects commercially as well as operationally, including forecasting, cost control, variations, gross margin, applications, subcontractor performance and client reporting., • You will need to understand contract delivery, project risk, statutory compliance, HSQE, supply chain management and client relationship management., • You should be confident managing multiple projects or one larger project, depending on workload and project allocation., • You will need good systems skills. Experience with SharePoint, Dynamics CRM, Asta Powerproject, Excel, Anaplan, document management systems or similar platforms would be useful, as the source job description specifically references these types of systems., • You should have a relevant construction, engineering, electrical, building services or project management background., • SMSTS, IOSH, CSCS and First Aid would be beneficial. A recognised project management qualification would also be useful., • A full driving licence will be needed due to the London and regional project coverage.
