This is a finance role with a genuine sense of purpose behind the numbers: do it well, and you're supporting the whole of local government work better.About the role We're looking for a Finance Manager to support the Director of Corporate Resources in managing day-to-day financial operations across the Solace group and lead and develop a small, capable team of three finance assistants. It's a broad, hands-on role - part technical delivery, part team leadership, part trusted adviser to colleagues who don't speak finance as fluently as you do. A genuinely varied role means your remit includes:, • Leading the team - managing and developing three Finance Assistants, • Financial management and reporting - nominal ledger, journals, reconciliations, and supporting monthly management accounts, forecasts and variance analysis, • Operational finance - payments, invoicing, credit control, cash flow and bank management, and fixed asset registers, • VAT - preparing and submitting quarterly returns and keeping records HMRC-ready, • Payroll and pensions - running monthly payroll, HMRC reporting and administering the pension portal, • Year-end and audit - closedown, working papers, audit queries and liaising with external auditors alongside the DCR, • Advice and improvement - supporting business cases and grant claims, offering constructive challenge on pipeline projections, and spotting ways to make finance-related systems and processes sharper, • Corporate services – outside of pure finance you may be supporting colleagues on IT, facilities, insurance and the practical things that keep us as an organisation tickingAbout you You don't need to tick every single box - if you recognise yourself in most of this, we'd love to hear from you:, • Solid grounding in financial management, budgeting, forecasting, controls and management reporting, • Confident with month-end routines, payroll and VAT returns (including partial exemption or TOMS), and the statutory compliance that comes with them, • Experience line managing a finance team, ideally in a hybrid setup, • Comfortable handling multiple income streams of different shapes and sizes, • A clear communicator who can explain complex finance to non-finance colleagues and influence decisions, • Hands-on with Sage 50 and/or Sage 200, • Organised, accurate with curiosity to find solutions and a genuinely collaborative way of workingA professional qualification helps with credibility — AAT would be great, and a full CCAB or part qualification (ACCA, CGMA, ACA) may be helpful, but not a prerequisite. The Finance Manager will be encouraged to spend 2-3 days in the office initially to build relationships and then can adjust., • Hours: 36.25-hour working week (standard 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM, 4:30 PM finish on Fridays), with options for informal or contracted flexibility., • Annual Leave: 28 days holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service.
