Are you a Road Surfacing Team Leader seeking a fresh challenge? Are you based in the North West region? Would you like the opportunity to ensure quality work and health and safety is a priority in your own crew? We are currently looking for a Surfacing Team Leader to join our friendly North West and North Wales team based out of Agecroft, Salford covering the North West of England and North Wales. We have gangs based in Ruthin, Merseyside, Wigan and Greater Manchester. This role is for our gang based in Manchester. Main Responsibilities As a working Surfacing Team Leader, you will be responsible for the safe operation of the surfacing sites that your crew works on, to the highest quality standards. You will monitor and oversee your crew on site including: Adherence to Health, Safety and Environmental regulations Delivery of the start of shift briefings including the vehicle and pedestrian management plan. Ensure all sub-contractors on site are authorised, required permits are issued and plant check lists completed Ensure all plant and equipment is inspected and maintained by the operators, is used in a safe manner in accordance with on-site rules and company procedures Liaise with the Client Representative and Site Supervisor to agree on the best way to safely undertake the works required, ensuring a high level of customer service and satisfaction Ensure the specification is complied with and produce site records such as levels, kerb checks, materials checks, monitoring of paving, rolling and density and site vacation checks Completion of daily time sheets and BPO report Manage your operatives including holiday and absence management The Ideal Candidate To be successful in the role of Surfacing Team Leader you will need to be experienced in machine lay asphalt works and have knowledge of all aspects of the surfacing operation. The ideal candidate for the role of Surfacing Team Leaderyou will also: Have experience of working with and overseeing operations of teams Have experience of operating surfacing equipment Be flexible in your working approach Be able to work independently and as part of a team Be motivated and able to work within set timeframes and achieve agreed production targets Have good communication skills and be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels Be compliant of Health and Safety policies and procedures and proactive in encouraging your team to do the same Basic computer / I.T. literacy At Tarmac, ‘who you are’ matters. We have gangs based in Merseyside, Wigan, Manchester and Ruthin — meaning this role offers great accessibility for candidates across North West England as well as Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Flintshire in North Wales. What You’ll Be Doing As our Road Surfacing Supervisor, you'll be at the heart of our site operations, responsible for leading people, delivering excellence, and driving day‑to‑day success. Your role will include: * Managing surfacing schemes across both the motorway and local road networks * Leading daily briefings and maintaining strong on‑site presence with Team Leaders and Operatives * Completing all site paperwork and admin in line with our Business Management System * Ensuring works are delivered to the highest standard and meet contract specifications * Identifying any variations and reporting them to the Surfacing Manager / Quantity Surveyor * Optimising cost control and operational efficiency, working to agreed budgets * Motivating, developing and supporting teams to deliver exceptional performance * Ensuring Health & Safety standards are upheld at all times * Building and maintaining positive customer relationships What We’re Looking For You’ll bring experience from the surfacing, highways or construction environment, along with the confidence and leadership skills to manage people, performance and safety. We’re ideally looking for someone who: * Has a CSCS card * Holds SMSTS (or minimum SSSTS) * Has hands‑on experience of asphalts, blacktop and road layingwith knowledge of the Specification for Highways Works and British Standards. * Has ideally worked on project work, including motorway schemes * Has experience in supervising and developing teams * Communicates clearly at all levels, internally and externally * Is knowledgeable about Health & Safety protocols * Can work flexibly, including night shifts and some weekends * Works well independently and as part of a wider team * Is self‑motivated, proactive and committed to delivering high standards Why Tarmac? This senior leadership role is accountable for delivering the local Operational Strategy, maximising financial performance, ensuring exemplary health & safety standards and developing high-performing operational teams within a complex, commercially driven environment. The Role You will lead area operations teams to deliver safe, efficient and profitable surfacing contracts, ensuring alignment to business strategy, budgets and performance targets.You will drive operational excellence, continuous improvement and strong client relationships while developing talent and future leadership capability. Experience within the road surfacing/asphalt contracting sector is essential.
