We take patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other diagnoses involving the neurologic system. The floor beds consist of patients requiring every 4-hour monitoring. Additionally, there are 7 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds embedded in the 21 neuro floor beds. These patients are seizure disorder patients admitted electively with their anti-convulsant medications on hold and hard wired to continuous EEG. This allows the physicians to identify the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Many of these patients become candidates for brain mapping with surgically placed grids to further pinpoint the area causing the seizures. This mapping allows the surgeon to determine if the patient would be a candidate for surgical removal of parts of the brain to stop seizure activity and still allow the patient to have functionality. This allows the physicians to identify the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. The primary disease focus includes patients with cardiac disease, and medical and surgical patients requiring telemetry monitoring. The age of the patients ranges between young adult (18 years) and geriatric (90+ years) with the majority of the patients between the ages of 55-75 years of age. Primarily, the patients have undergone cardiac or thoracic surgery. A subset of our population includes patients who present with a cardiac diagnosis or have undergone a diagnostic, interventional, or surgical procedure and requires telemetry monitoring post-procedure. Continuous pulse oximetry is available and provided to patients based on meeting specific monitoring criteria as outlined in the unit policy. Department/Unit: ICU-Surgical And Neuroscience - B2 Work Shift: Day (United States of America) Salary Range: $83,200.00 - $93,184.00 The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has a combined total of 30 intensive care beds designed to provide specialized care to the critically ill adult (14 and older) patient. The unit has a usual 50/50 split of patient population between the neuro and surgical patient population. The focus of care is includes patients with life-threatening conditions related to major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ system failure, hemodynamic instability and failure to wean. The SICU and Neuro ICU patient needs encompass but are not limited to comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring. SICU-Neuro ICU nurses require the following skill set – ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion among others.
