Commissioned in 1991, the Long Island Sound Cable, a pioneering 345 kV transmission circuit, utilizes Laminated Paper Polypropylene insulation. Spanning 26.3 miles from Con Edisons Sprain Brook Substation in Yonkers to East Garden City Substation, it includes the South Transition Station, housing equipment like a 3-phase, 150 MVAr, 345kV Shunt Reactor. In NYC, the Garden City and Port Washington High Voltage Underground Transmission Lines distribute power at 345kV, featuring robust infrastructure for energy demands. Opportunity Summary The High Voltage Substation/Transmission Technician Lead is responsible for conducting routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify signs of wear, damage, or corrosion, followed by performing preventative maintenance tasks to forestall outages and maintain system integrity. In emergency situations, prompt coordination with NYPA and external contractors ensures the safe repair or replacement of damaged components, while collaboration with technicians and field crews aids in restoration efforts. Additionally, supervision of testing and troubleshooting involves overseeing the use of specialized equipment. Your scope of responsibility as High Voltage Substation/Transmission Technician Lead includes the following primary functions: Line Inspection and Maintenance • Conduct routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify wear, damage, corrosion, or other defects., • Perform preventative maintenance activities to maintain system integrity and reduce the risk of outages. Emergency Response and Repair Coordination, • Coordinate and supervise emergency response efforts with internal teams and external contractors during system disturbances, including storm damage and equipment failures., • Oversee repair or replacement of critical components such as conductors, insulators, and line hardware, ensuring timely system restoration and coordination with field crews. Testing, Troubleshooting, and System Oversight, • Supervise the use of specialized testing and diagnostic equipment to evaluate transmission line performance and system health., • Oversee fault analysis, including short circuit and insulation diagnostics, and ensure proper calibration and operation of protective relays and associated control devices. Vegetation and Right-of-Way Management, • Coordinate vegetation management activities with internal teams and contractors to maintain required right-of-way (ROW) clearances., • Oversee inspection and mitigation of vegetation encroachment to ensure safe and reliable transmission corridor operation. Documentation, Reporting, and Safety Compliance, • Ensure accurate documentation of inspections, maintenance activities, and system conditions within asset management systems., • Oversee incident and near-miss reporting while ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and proper PPE usage., • Support safety training participation and enforcement of field safety standards. Administrative Systems and Work Management (CMMS / Maximo), • Oversee CMMS (Maximo) utilization for tracking maintenance activities, ensuring accurate data entry, system compliance, and optimized workflow management., • Assign and prioritize work orders, monitor execution progress, and analyze maintenance data to identify trends and improve operational efficiency. Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Optimization, • Collaborate with maintenance teams and stakeholders to develop, optimize, and adjust maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and maximize system availability., • Ensure effective execution of planned and corrective maintenance activities. Budgeting and Cost Control, • Monitor maintenance expenditures for high-voltage transmission and substation operations, ensuring adherence to approved budgets., • Identify cost optimization opportunities and support development of annual maintenance budgets through data analysis, equipment needs forecasting, and lifecycle cost insights. NAES Safe Safety is a core value at NAES, and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to remain mentally alert and work safely at all times. Employees must also adhere to all safety warnings and posted signs while on company property. Additionally, they are required to follow all NAES safety rules and procedures.
